    Angry pony and Reiki

A reiki practitioner used to come to our yard quite regularly and worked with different horses for various reasons. Out of interest more than anything, I asked her to do a session on my mini Shetland and was astonished by how relaxed he was during the treatment - he was almost falling asleep...

    Turnout situations... what is yours?

I have unrestricted turnout all year round on DIY livery. I have my own fields (approx 3 acres for 1 horse and 2 minis) so have to manage them as best as possible but generally have plenty of grass until end of January at least. Fields do get a bit trashed but are always seeded , harrowed and...

    Orbitless bridle... or bitless recommendation

I use the Micklem Multibridle in the sidepull option with reins fixed to the rings. I had the same problem in finding a bit that my horse didn't seem unhappy with and he seems to be much better with this. Wish I had gone bitless sooner to be honest.

Body Protector all the time or not?

Haha yes! A good cheap solution!

Body Protector all the time or not?

Well I didn't think it sounded that loud when they demonstrated it in the shop but my horse thought otherwise! It's not a hiss - more like a loud snap of a piece of wood. Other people's horses seem to be largely fine with it. Mine is a Point Two so it would be useful to know if others are quieter.

Body Protector all the time or not?

Thanks yes, I wondered about that - I'll need to try to find a similar sound. I know that firework CDs are available for desensitizing pets to that sound so I'll have a look online to see if there's anything that could be used to mimic the air jacket.

Body Protector all the time or not?

I tend to wear my BP every time I ride these days and although you do get used to it, it does feel quite bulky and rigid to me. I wore an air jacket to ride my horse shortly after he was backed and unfortunately he was badly frightened by the noise when I had a fall and it inflated (he is a...

    Corralling a Shetland

That wouldn't keep mine in (even with a current going through it) but they are particularly adept at trashing fences. I usually have three strands of tape with the first one about a foot max from the ground. I've stood and watched them take a run at a single strand and duck under it on their...

    Letter to my Instructor

I don't often post on here but I can relate to what you're saying. I also have a spooky and slightly unpredictable horse and find it really hard to stay relaxed at times even though I know I must. It sounds like you're doing pretty well to me! My first instructor was extremely helpful and...
