Do you totally blitz your stable before winter?

The intention is always there....I throw out all bedding, brush walls etc with the full intention of disinfecting but usually the disinfecting doesn't happen. I have heavy mats that i can't move on my own so to do a proper job they need lifting, that's what puts me off. I really should do it!

Giving an older horse time off

Interesting thread - I gave my older boy a holiday while I had a baby, he was 15/16 and had nearly a year of me not riding him but did have someone riding him initially, probably had a clear 6 months field rest. He came back better than ever in terms of his attitude and how he feels, however he...

    Off to Mr Webb's tomorrow

Just read all the comments now. Doesn't sound like a worthwhile trip to JW, and as someone else said trying to recreate an issue in a strange environment is never going to get the same response as at home. When i dropped my horse off (who would throw himself away from you if you tried to get...

    Off to Mr Webb's tomorrow

Just read this and felt i had to reply. I dont know your horse's background / issues, but I took a young horse to Jason years ago after a horrible incident where he freaked while i was trying to get on resulting in a nasty fall. Jason worked with him and gave me lessons and he was adamant that...

Where would you look to get a good horse on a budget ?

Local facebook groups and word of mouth, that is how I've bought my last 2 on similar budget. Previous was a 4yo who had been backed but owner had come off and lost interest. He was from a community where education wasn't of high importance and couldn't put a decent advert together, and as...

Ragwort & getting rid of it

I sprayed mine by hand with Roundup, wouldn't be practical for large areas as you have to spray each individual plant, but it defo worked on the verge outside my house. I guess time will tell if it comes back in the spring but certainly removed all trace of it this summer.

Ragwort & getting rid of it

I've been religiously digging our summer field with a rag fork over the last couple of years and each year it is getting worse. Plus, we are now left with little indents in the ground that the plants are growing in where they have been dug so many times. So this year now that the horses have...

    Topped field / ragwort

Thank you, that's a lot less than I was expecting. Worrying we'd have no winter grazing!

    Topped field / ragwort

Can anyone advise how long it would take for topped ragwort to rot away? Bit of a disaster at our yard, our well meaning yard owners husband topped our winter paddock to get rid of some thistles but the field contained some ragwort. Not a huge amount, say a dozen plants on about five acres...

    A Breeding / Pedigree / DNA Question

The dam is an irish sports horse. I've googled her and see she is now competing dressage in the south, so may be able to track the owners down after all.

    A Breeding / Pedigree / DNA Question

Hi all, I’ve recently purchased a 3yo filly who has no breeding registered in her passport, however I was told she is nicely bred and I’d like to get her breeding verified. I contacted her passport agency, SHB(GB), who said that I can get a DNA test for my filly providing they hold the details...

    Updating passport

When i bought my last mare, the chap i bought her from hadn't updated the passport with his details. So I just sent it off with my details and date of purchase, i dont think any questions were asked.

    Panicking about new addition

I would never have thought i could manage 2, given that mine are on DIY and I commute mon-fri. But I managed, surprisingly well. All i did was stop hitting the snooze button on my alarm in the mornings, and moved a bit quicker. Amazing what you can get done! Also having 2 to do in winter...

    Mums! Riding after episiotomy?

That's really good to know : ) Positive stories are good!! Am trying the massage, but everything is surprisingly...erm...strong. Sorry if that's TMI, but guess that's what a lifetime of riding does for you!

    Mums! Riding after episiotomy?

Haha, thanks! I watched 1 born last night as well, again, big mistake! In my mind i'm allowing myself 2 months to recover / make life adjustments, so anything less than that will be a bonus. I've also done a really stupid thing and offered to buy a 3yo (subject to vetting this fri) so i will...
