    Worried about being under-horsed (size-wise)...

    Double post, sorry!

    Worried about being under-horsed (size-wise)...

I was looking for a middleweight 15-16hh gelding to do a bit of everything with. He was younger than I was looking for, and heavier in build that I was looking for, but I was assured that size and demeanor was spot on and there was something about him that made him stand out. Of course, it's...

    Worried about being under-horsed (size-wise)...

The frustrating thing is, I used to be! My first horse was a stocky 14.3hh, and he was incredible fun. However, my last horse was 16.2hh (by the time he'd finished spurting - he was bought as a 15.2!), I've since had a back injury which means I don't deal with the choppy strides as well as I...

    Worried about being under-horsed (size-wise)...

Honestly? Like I was riding a 12.2 pony. I guess I’d hoped it looked better than it felt, but no, it doesn’t. I feel like the general consensus here is probably spot on... get him brought into work, see how he goes and how he feels, and if it’s not right by spring then probably sell him...

    Worried about being under-horsed (size-wise)...

Some lovely replies here, thank you all. I think my main problem is that the picture of me and him together is very top heavy (I was mortified when I saw a photo) - I’m longer in the body than I am the leg, and combined with the fact that a 5’6 rug is generous on him, I’m sure you can...

    Worried about being under-horsed (size-wise)...

And I'm not sure what to do about it. I bought my boy in the summer, unseen from Ireland (I know, I know). He's 3.5, and a lovely, lovely youngster who is going to make somebody a really fabulous mount. My concern is whether that's me or not. I'm 5'6 and around 10st. Always been most...

Fat 3 year old... what do you do with them?!

He lives out 24/7, naked, in a large field on reasonable grass... it’s not wonderful quality, but he’s clearly still getting plenty of it! Feed-wise at the moment he’s only getting a token gesture of hifi molasses free. He was broken this summer (he came over from Ireland a few months...

Fat 3 year old... what do you do with them?!

He goes out in-hand or on long lines a couple of times a week at the minute; he did a small amount of ridden work over the summer, but our only riding right now is roadwork, and we’re lacking the company to take him out with. Makes it a bit problematic, really... the weight just keeps piling...

Fat 3 year old... what do you do with them?!

Self explanatory, really. Definitely a comfortable 4, score-wise. Fatty paddock? Stabling? Muzzle? Nothing, and expect it to drop off over winter? I’m torn, because of his age. Answers on a postcard, please! :)

    I hogged her!

She looks fab!! What’s your weight loss secret, if you don’t mind me asking?

Young horse in an old herd? Can it work?

12 acres, between 8 horses. They’re not short of space, and where the fence came down was not in a corner. Mine isn’t a thug, genuinely - having been turned out with 20+ horses in the time I’ve had him, I’ve never had a problem with him and behaviour. However, this single gelding in...

Young horse in an old herd? Can it work?

Thanks for the perspectives, I appreciate it. Said youngster seems to have found his way into the herd - by upping his aggression to the lowest member. It’s odd, as he’s such a sweet boy to handle, and we had no such problems in his old herd, but he really seems to hate the sight of this...

Young horse in an old herd? Can it work?

So how long is reasonable to give this to settle? It’s hard not to stress given the behaviour I’ve seen over the past few days (I’m not being dramatic, one particularly could have ended very badly). Other liveries are raising concerns and aren’t happy... I’ve not been in this position...

Young horse in an old herd? Can it work?

Good points raised... but it’s so difficult to quantify the right point to intervene. I feel in my heart of hearts that it was hit today, but I’m torn over whether I’m being too “precious”. Herd dynamics are fascinating, and it’s amazing how coordinated they...

Young horse in an old herd? Can it work?

Amymay - they were next to each other for a week, and have been together for a week. I’m aware it’s still very early days. I’ve had horses out in group turnout for years, and the minor kicking, squealing, biting, etc doesn’t bother me. What does bother me is watching my...
