My horse has a scurfy mane and a little bit of scurf in the tail. I have treated him with Coopers, I washed his mane and tail the other day with dermoline insecticidal shampoo and all of the scurf came out it was like dandruff stuck in his mane, but 2 days later I can see a build up of scurf...
My friend's horse is experiencing exactly the same problems as 'Willow2', the mane and tail are itchy and he is rubbing them, several vets have looked at him and elimated sweet itch, he has had several skin scrapes...but all come back clear. We are desperate to find out what it is, but no vets...

My horse used to have a small square salt lick (the one's you put in holders), he never looked at it. Recently I have put a large round rock salt one (same as Mickeys) and he actually uses it now!

I think that turning out is the best cure, but if it's not always possible then you could put some rubber matting down in the stable, as this will help keep your horse off the hard concrete which can promote swelling in the back legs.
