Could you try practising shoulder-in on completely straight lines (eg. When out hacking)
It might help you have more confidence getting your lead, and then use shoulder-in every time you go into canter wherever you are? I've found it gives me more confidence and helps me stop the horse running...

I was wondering how you signal left when leading a pony in-hand on the road. It is difficult to swap the reins and whip into the other hand, and I don't think it is anywhere near as noticeable as using the right hand to signal turning right.

I've found that I am struggling to get any horse that I ride to go on the bit, and there are two particular phrases that I can't seem to put into practise- when I am told to go 'soft through the hand' I just don't understand! Also, 'feeling down the reins' I can't get the grip of!
