I agree as well. I have found that bloods are always inconclusive for this kind of thing. I would definitely just do your best with keeping her happy and keeping weight on her and you will know when to call it a day. I have recently moved my really fussy mare over to Baileys Senior soft and...
No legumes (I.e alfalfa), grass hay and haylage only. Not too high in protein (up to 12%) and not high calcium, linseed oil is really good for the omega 3’s. No nsaids. I supplement vitamin b as they can be bit anaemic.
My horse had acute kidney failure 4 years ago. She was very poorly, wouldn’t eat, she lost 50kg in a short space of time. 6 days in Intensive care on fluids and steroids and came home. Ever since she drinks a lot and so is wet in the stable, but otherwise normal. She has chronic kidney failure...
My horse stopped eating her normal soaked hay and Timothy haylage a few weeks ago. Since then I have bought different types of haylage which she eats for a while and then refuses to eat it. I’m running out of ones available to try. She is eating her hard food and some grass chop but I’m...
Thank you. I am in Fenland, at the moment we have minimal grass. Hay comes from Norfolk but the reason I had a blood test was that she is refusing to eat soaked hay and timothy haylage (which normally makes up her ration). For the moment all I have found that she is eating is a high fibre...
Thank you. I did fill in their online questionnaire and they came back recommending a balancer with sainfoin as the main ingredient. As this is a legume (and £57.50 a bag) i discounted it.
Hi. I was hoping for some advice or recommendations regarding a tricky feeding situation.
My warmblood mare, 20 this year, had acute kidney failure 4 years ago. It was touch and go but she made it but it has left her kidneys compromised. To add to the dilemma she also has EMS. Her blood...
Hi. Do you have a picture of what you’re looking for? I may have one. I think mine is a haylo but I don’t use the disc. From memory it came with 2 different ones but I’m not sure I have both of them I will have to check.
Prascend is a big appetite suppressant, I wouldn’t increase. We took a 32 year old that wasn’t eating that well off prascend and he started eating so well he put on loads of weight. There is stuff on the internet about it but might be worth reducing as a test provided there is no imminent...
I just had a bill for a visit, just 4 X-rays and 20 sachets of Bute for just over £500. I wasn’t impressed as they wouldn’t even send me the X-rays I had to take photos which were not great quality. Personally I would prepare for a lot more but as others said, it depends how much blocking is...
I have always taught my horses to stand at the mounting block at the end of exercise. They tend to be happier to stand. I get on and really praise them when they stand, then get off and do it multiple times. I didn’t use treats just lots of praise.
I’ve had something similar in the past and we ended up doing a full body scan. Expensive, but you could spend just as much trying to locate potential multiple issues.
When my horse was first diagnosed with EMS I got some drugs from the vet that helped with weight loss as I struggled whilst she was on box rest. Once it was off I’ve been able to keep it off but needed that help at the beginning. It worked really well. I can’t remember the name but I think it...
