I have used in the past black current juice to get Problim horses to eat. It has worked for me 8/10.
It was somthing a rep from I think Saracen told me when she came to a Stud I was working on years ago.Worth a go to get your chap eating.
Hi Wench can I ask why you only want to feed 1kg a day of hard feed to your horse.
I understand that a horse or pony needs to eat 1% of its body weight a day to maintain condition, muscle function, energy and to provide the nutrients for health.
I have looked now at the Dengie feed Good...
I saw a post on Facebook forum about a feed called Shape Up I think it's from Saracen that is mix but you only feed it at a low rate. But don't know if it's molasses free.
I also think Dengie have a complte unmolassed feed.
Have you looked on the back of the bag and seen how much they say you have to feed a day to meet the recommended feed intake of 14.2 I just cannot feed that much feed a day to our Laminitis prone chap a bag would only last 4/5 days if that.
So I keep to Hi-FI lite and a good GP Sup and Hay...
Hi Skewby Two
Lots of clam well planned schooling with good stable management and time at grass. On the feed front it will not be the sugar as there is plenty in grass and the horse has spent 100,000 of years evolving to eat and digest it.
I would feed a high fibre diet Hay/Alfalfa, Sugar...
Before we throw too meny stones lets just remember how many horses will die on British,Australian, European and US race tracks this year. Also what do we think hapens to all the 100s of TB foals born this spring that never evan make it to Youngstock sales let alone the 2 year old sales.
This is...
I think it is now time to get the rugs off and get some sun on those backs .I know I will be unpopular with some but remember they are hardly animals and have evolved to live without a rug.
Thanks Million Doller I have used All-in-One in the past when it was called somthing diifrent showing my age, as a general sup with sugar beet and Alfa A and a low energy cube for a string of 3 year old TBs.But it was a bit of a faff for the weekend grooms to feed.
I have now spoken to 7...
I am not convinced by any Calmers. I think it is all down to lots of Schooling,a calm stable environment with sensible / calm management and the correct feed for the horse and its work.
Dear Marigold
What ever you do you must keep feeding high levels of forage,be this long chop hay/haylage or a short chop hay replacer or the best of all turnout on good grass.
The digestive system is key to the wellbeing of the horse as it is designed to digest fibre fact.
If you do...
I would call one of the better hores feed helplines like A&P, Saracen and TopSpec they are 3 that always get nominated and Win the nutrition advice awards each year.
Hi ellsbells I think what dianchi said sounds just what I would do C&C or any good hard feed at the recommend level for the Vits, mins and Equi Jewel to hold the condition with a some Alfa A oil as well.
If he is a good doer and his feet, skin and coat look ok and his hay is good. I would not worry and let the forage do its job. The grass will soon be yielding all that he needs if you are not working him.
