I get the best results from sewing them in straight through the middle of the "ball" of the plait to really push them up into the "hood".

The only time when I think bright colours look best is for flag colours in internationals... but that's just my opinion! ;)
I really rate the Woof Wear Event gloves. The fabric used for the palm is incredibly grippy and thin, while the stretchy breathable fabric on the back makes it feel like you don't have any gloves on!
