Would you and do you turn out on rough frozen ground?

As title and at 7am? New livery arrived on the understanding that we are on slightly restricted turnout due to wet winter but promised 3-4 hours per day and offered to do the turning out and getting in for her for her for free. Arrived Saturday pm, we discussed turnout and I suggested she...

Olympia 2017 - The Chilean Huasos - thoughts?

I was lucky enough to have a stables pass yesterday afternoon during the interval and I saw all the horses from the display going back to their stables, my daughter was allowed to pat one much to her joy! They past within 2 feet of me, they all looked fabulous, the only marks I could see was a...

DIY Price Per Week in South West?

Please could you all be very kind and give me an idea of what you pay per stable plus extra facilities like turnout, school, tack room, solarium, wash area etc? Trying to get an idea of prices mainly in the Salisbury area but happy to hear from further out too.

Horses and having children on yards....thoughts?

My daughter has been coming to do the horses with me since she was in a pram. Once she started walking we had a rule that she sat on a bucket just outside my stable while I was mucking out, she wasn't allowed scooters or trikes or her bike as she got older unless there were no other horses in...

Can a pony have Cushings and EMS?

I have an 11.2hh 15 year old Welsh Section who we bought recently for my daughter. He came with Metformin as we were told he had been tested for EMS 3 years ago and prescribed Metformin which helped. We had had him a week when I decided to test for cushings as he was drinking excessively, was...

Price difference between DIY, part and assisted livery

I think from reading the op, it says that the current yard doesn't offer anything other than DIY and that they would like to stay on that yard ideally.

    Jumping and losing the plot

The trick there is to be like me and unable to get on again without the aid of a mountng block or handily placed gate. Does wonders for the stoicism!

The house is so empty tonight

I'm so sorry, it is so hard losing any animal and I as a Siamese owner (although she sees it that she is an owner of a human) know what huge characters they are and can imagine the awful silence in the house today. Do hope you feel better soon.

Horse with blocked nasal passage WWYD?

Thank you everyone, I know it was the right thing to do, he was just beginning to deteriorate but still looked well and happy thank goodness. He was a true gent who was charming and kind, he will be very sorely missed.

He is gone, feels like my heart has gone with him.

Horse with blocked nasal passage WWYD?

Treatment for cyst would be GA and drill into nasal passage, wouldn't cure it but would give him more air through it. Essentially, he has at most a year before the infection eats through his bone. Please just believe me when I say he would utterly heartbroken to be turned out as a field...

That actually sums it up very well, thank you.

Horse with blocked nasal passage WWYD?

He hates being out, it is frankly his idea of hell. Despite the nicest field in the world this spring he looked very hopeful everyday when I went to see him that I had brought the lorry. I'm afraid this is my feeling too, despite the vets saying they have the capacity to cope, I just can't...

Horse with blocked nasal passage WWYD?

Long, long and very expensive story but cut short, last September my very precious old man had to have 2 upper back teeth removed as one was rotten and the other fractured. Surgeon rang me during removal to warn that removing both (fractured one hadn't shown on x-ray) could make healing tricky...

Wits end with anorexic horse, ideas please.

Copra has sorted all my fussy feeders except my old Cushing pony who is a nightmare to feed and refuses anything sloppy even though he has no teeth! Baileys Ease and Excel he adores and will eat that with anything in it!

    Well that was interesting....

Horses are all individuals and the OP has clearly owned him for a long time, the vet has clearly been treating him for a long time so I would guess they probably between them know a great deal more about the horse than you do.

    Great, but simple, ideas ...

Cut up a thick bath towel into 4 pieces, sew around the edges and you have 4 leg wraps that you can bandage on to horses legs to dry them off after washing. Much cheaper than thermatex leg wraps and just as good.

Pony snatching and improving rider balance

My daughter has just come off the lead rein and I have put balance support reins on as the pony is a bit big for her and he snatches the reins. They are a godsend and life with them is much easier. However, I do also second Be Postive, the pony has no idea what is being asked so yes, keep...

A very, very hard post to write.

I am so very sorry Michen, what an utterly devastating thing to happen. Be kind to yourself, you gave him a wonderful time and every chance to get better. You were both just terribly unlucky.

How many people give their horses a proper holiday every year?

Mine! And he is coming to stay with you! He has starting packing already, I have told him he has got a while yet but he likes to be organised. He is currently deciding if he will need his speedos or not.

    Rugs. Slipping. Arghhhhhh! Help

Mio's are useless in my experience, don't stay on at all. Rambo Duo's are brilliant and never move, even with the slippery liners underneath.

Pony Club rules these days - what do I need to know?

I run the 'Mini' section of our pony club and the rules are not very strict, we do ask for safety as in up to standard hats and body protectors and safe boots but silks are sometimes a bit bright and if very cold or hot or wet we are sensible about not insisting on pony club clothing. I think...

How do you decide what rug for what weather?

I have the old Rambo Duo's and use them with PE Liners, 1 x 100g and 2 x 200g. It makes life so easy because I can alter the weights just by adding or removing one rug. Would never go back to lots of different weight turnouts now.

    Child issue on livery yard

Mine is exactly the same, regularly is off to live with Granny! They are very fickle and most of the time they don't really understand the true meaning behind what they say. I should just carry on as normal, probably by next week the child will have changed their mind again!

Bag of bones wind sucking tb

The learnt / hereditary thing is very interesting. I had a Bogof foal who went still on her mother to live in a herd. The boss of the herd wind sucked all the time, he was old, it was clearly a long standing habit and he was a bit like a chain smoker! The foal has never, ever shown any...

    Nasal Discharge, any ideas welcome

My horse had this but eventually the yellow gunk began to smell (actually stink, made me gag) and he had one rotten tooth and one fractured one next door to each other. His was picked up with an X-ray of his head. Could be a tooth problem, has the horse been X rayed?

    Anyone have an Anshan/Jaystara horse?

I rode an Anshan filly, 2 year old, many years ago when I was working in flat racing called Santella Katie. She was about 14.2hh at her wither and 15.1hh behind which made sitting on her on a Monday morning quite exciting! She was a sweet filly, I loved her but quite nervous and very weak and...

    Young Horse Misbehaving Help Please

There are always so many factors to consider with young horses and each one is different in attitude, capability, strength, mental competence etc. We are coming into winter, the ground is changing daily, it may have felt slippy in the field to him that day, he may not have felt comfortable with...

    Dangerous Driver! *RANT*

I have just moved house and having spent the last 3 years hacking on very narrow, quiet country lanes I was horrified, when I rode yesterday, at the speed some drivers come past. Luckily both my old horse and the pony are great in traffic but I am very relieved my youngster is at livery...
