    Class C license & lorry pro's/con's WWYD

I would actually go a bit bigger but non hgv, the payload is handy and frankly 4t is nothing. Its been very handy having a lorry licence, I got mine through a horsey job, and now drive one for a living! I first had a little lorry at 19, and it was cheaper to insure than my car!

    Class C license & lorry pro's/con's WWYD

Lorries aren't a cheap hobby, and do cost a fair bit when things go wrong. My friend budgets about 2k a year I think. The other option is a 4x4 for towing and a smaller every day car. That said, a lorry is cheaper to tax and insure than many 4x4's. I personally prefer driving a lorry.

    Loaning "deposit"....

I would never have a horse on loan in these circumstances. If you want me to have it on permanent loan and expect me to hand over a large sum of money to do so for a horse with maintenance issues its called a sale. If it was someone I considered a friend expecting this it would probably end our...

    Long socks with no chaps

I do it all the time, including fast work and jumping. I guess it depends what you are used to.

    Arab and Spanish horse people

Mine live out 24/7 fully clipped and rugged up. They don't mind the snow and never have. Mine are known as run wild and run free. They don't like being stabled much, so wouldn't stay in happily at home. Strangely they have always been fine stabling at competitions! These arabs are pretty tough!

    Travelling dilemma

My little mare always went behind the driver regardless of who she was with as didn't like being next to the ramp, and my friends horse insisted on coming off first, I never had a problem and drove 1000's of miles like it.

    Countryfile “horse whisperer”

I had an IH person out to help with a youngster that developed issues being caught rapidly, and surprisingly. I had really hoped they would help, but they made a bad situation a 100 times worse, and it took over a month before I could touch him again. I was hoping for help with some out of the...

    Livery Issue.

Do you pay for services? If so he was under their care at the time, and therefore not your problem. When I freelanced I had insurance in place so that if a horse I was dealing with damaged something I was covered. Personally I would be furious at them getting an inexperienced child to turn my...

    VERY VERY VERY wet gelding

I used miscanthus for a mare previously getting one bale of shavings a day, we went down to three a fortnight! I would also take the salt luck out, greedy ones will eat it, and then drink and per excessively. I think regular Cushing's tests may be an idea too, I've seen so many younger horses...

Uproar as fun ride still going ahead in bad weather

If it's the one near me, it was an outside hire and not organised by the venue. That said, it would have been so wet in places that you could end up with no shoes and a knackered tendon in walk as the ground gets deadly very quickly. They would also have got much of the flack from not cancelling...

Full clip and living out over winter

Mine live out fully clipped every year. I've never had any problems but do have plenty of rugs.

    Racing exercise saddle

The last few yards I've worked on all the horses have been ridden in full tree saddles. I have a saddle company one, and it's great. I've also done endurance in it, up to 50 miles with no issues. Personally I would no longer use a half tree.

Bolting at the mount & dismount. HELP!

Firstly, have you spoken to anyone who knew him when he was racing? This would help to know if it was historic. I have come across a couple who are fine, as long as you don't ask them to stand. Secondly, ulcers, I would always check them for staying clear several times post treatment following...

    A yard WWYD

My horses are shod in the lay-by. Have had teeth done their too, although we do have a stable at the yard our field owner has which is very helpful.

    17 Stone beginner rider

The riding school I taught at did have one horse that had a weight limit of 18 stone. Sadly the horse was eventually PTS, but was well over 25! Tell your friend to try an army saddle club, they are set up for larger men and teach lots of that size.

What a horrible shock for you. Take care of yourself.

    More Arab buying!

Any time. Two of my friends have bought Tannasg horses, both will be that size and chestnut is the norm. They are in Scotland though, it was a long way to travel!

    Window shopping....

The horesquest one is at another dealer near me. Looks a nice type and they did have a teenager riding a lot of theirs at one point so relatively safe. Yes I do know him! I also found a companion pony for my MIL at his yard, although she will be ridden if I ever get time.

    Window shopping....

I hadn't realised that Amber had damaged herself again! On a positive note my mare has had nearly a year off and has consistently been declared sound by the vet since october. 4 weeks into trotting and she seems the best she has in a long time, so I'm hopeful that she stays normal for a while...

    WB vs Irish

My ISH was free due to serious temperament issues. She isn't hugely friendly, but has improved hugely on this front, you no longer think she would kick you for fun. As she has strengthened up her movement has improved massively. She has a big heart if she is on your side and is tough as they...

    Moving a horse

A dealer locally to me is still shipping horses abroad at the moment with no issues and her new stock mainly come from Ireland. I can't see a problem personally.

What do people think about this?

The speed is off for medium gallop, I use a watch and it tells me how fast I'm going. A normal day on the gallops you certainly wouldn't hit 54kph, unless you were being run away with!

    Weekend plans

I'm hoping to do something (anything!!) with my lot this weekend. Work has gone bananas, I'm usually lucky to do 30 hours plus my one evening teaching at this time of year but have done 57 hours this week!! I'm glad to see some rain, it's pretty firm here now so hopefully it will rain a bit...

If not riding what are you doing with your horse?!

I took one out in hand hacking in walk and trot. I had to hit over 16kph to keep up at one point. Riding might be safer!

Livery yards being closed, banned from seeing our horses

We have gone to doing the horses in slots. My main herd share a field with a friend, but we both have one on the yard so have a spot each which means if necessary one of is can go twice a day. There are nearly 30 horses between our herd and the yard, so far too much for our poor farmer. We have...

So who is going to work tomorrow?

Thanks for that. I was quite busy in Feb, which is lucky as I teach too, and obviously that is finished for a fair while! At least at the moment we are mental, so work for now, and a key business so a bit of pressure off.

So who is going to work tomorrow?

I'm at work too. I'm a lorry driver so is busier now for me. That said I'm also on a zero hours contract so we don't even get 80% as why should we even though we are going out to keep everything going.

Harry Hall Member or BHS Gold member

There is a company which escapes my brain for the moment which does catastrophy insurance. As yours are older maybe look at that instead? Most companies wouldn't actually pay out for any investigation on older horses anyway!

    Coronavirus and money

I'm an agency driver so no guarantee of anything, including sick pay if I'm off. Thankfully mine live out, and if it came to it I could take everyone's shoes off. At the moment we are short of staff as they are all going sick so I'm trying to do plenty of hours now in preparation. I don't...

    Implications on horse care. Coronavirus.

Oh I get it, but saying this could be around long term and the panic which has been caused has been dreadful, and could change the face of the world due to the economic turmoil it will cause.
