A Very Sad Day In The Life Of A Work Rider 😭

Oh no!!! I've just been catching up on FB and saw the yard post ... so very sorry, Elf - awful news. Loved reading about him in your posts ... Sleep tight, Big Bad Borris. 😢

Can you imagine life without horses?

I'm starting to imagine it. After decades of mucking out and getting up early 365 days a year with few breaks, holidays or any lie-ins (or spare money!) I know that I wouldn't be able to afford the purchase price of another after H and feel I'd actually quite like to try another kind of life ...

    I lost my Spud.

Oh, I am so very sorry! Making that kind of decision is always so hard. Sometimes, you have no choice but to make the call then and there. Sometimes, you just have to do what you can, then (kindly) do what you did: look at the options, the reality, the outcome and the fairness to the animal...

Prices just went up another level

From what I've seen on several occasions over the last year, it's thrown people's 'don't touch with a barge pole' antennae totally out of whack. Where before, you'd have said 'If it's that only that price, what's wrong with it?', people are now spending thousands and buying the sort of trouble...

    are all yards the same

I think it has become a bit of a rant, yes! No, not all yards are the same. All the yards I've been on in over 50 years (including my own family's yard) have been very chilled and generally joyful places. They may not have been the smartest nor the most posh, but they have all been happy places...

    Horse riding holidays U.K.

I went to Cae Iago in Wales a few years ago - loved it and would go back in a heartbeat.

    Look at these plaits

They are amazing, aren't they? She's one of the horses bred by the Penhaligon Stud :)

    Farewell Fly

Gorgeous tribute ... but so sorry you had to say goodbye ... Sleep well, Fly.

Would you get your horse stuffed?

Not unless I needed a new saddle rack. Seriously, I wouldn't see the point as for me, once the light in their eyes has gone, so has their soul from their body. I don't believe in much but I do believe that bit of them, their very essence will stay with me until it's time for me to go too...

    What's happened to shiteventers?

Don't know - I did think there was a shortage of people falling off on my FB page this morning, though ... 🤔

Love it! Thanks for that, Elf!

Right. Elf On A Shelf, a racing question ...

Thank you for the explanation ... maybe freestyle racing could become a 'thing' - choose your own direction, course, pace and style ... betting on it would be fun ...

Right. Elf On A Shelf, a racing question ...

Presume the commentator was kind of supposed to understand what was happening before they accepted the gig ... 🤷‍♀️ Nothing injured as far as I can see and none of the fences look too bad but the sign-posting was a bit suss ...?!?

    Prince update!

I have mine on Top Chop Zero - he can't have hay whatever I do to it, so he's on haylage. To avoid overfeeding, he has about 6 big double handfuls of Top Chop in a bucket, dampened down, at night alongside his haylage ration. For about the first week, he dived in and polished off the lot as...

    Hot Tap or Hippo!

I know the lady who runs Hippo with her husband through a business group - they're in Lincs. Anyway, she originally really wanted a shower unit for her horse but there were all sorts of snags with the ones on the market, mainly (I believe) because the components weren't that suitable. So he did...

    Pink nose in summer

Filtabac. <--- that's the lad and as you can see, he has a white snozzle and very pink nostrils (and lips). Has a full face mask, have tried every suncream under the, well, sun .... and nothing I've found so far beats the protection, stickability (and as Hey Mich says) healing power of Filtabac.

    A picture from the past

Lovely photo ... :) I still have a bit like that in my collection! Brass rings and nickel mouthpiece (remember polishing the rings with Brasso) ... dunno what on earth I'm 'saving' it for, though!

    A picture from the past

This is me aged about 8(?) so 1975 at the local gymkhana on the RS pony I looked after, Inky. Black rubber boots, school cardi & tie, pancake saddle with foam pad and a plastic blue & yellow browband ... think this was the year he ate the potato in the potato race ... (and that's my...

Opinions on the new lemieux colours

As an aside, the Lemieux pads I've seen seem to go quite 'rough' on the underside after they've been washed a number of times and it's put me off buying one - anyone else find this? (I only buy when the binding near the girth's worn out so ideally they have to last 3 or 4 years.)

What do I need to know about livery yards?

Some great questions to ask already listed above but personally if I could have my own yard again (years ago but 14 acres, 9 boxes, on a bridle path, little school etc) would I? Nope. Nah. Nah-ah. Nor would I go on full or part livery. I've been on 4 yards in nearly 30 years, 3 of them DIY with...

    Yard Organisational Porn

I've invented a couple of storage products designed to make people's horse-life easier ... can't link here as I'd be told off for advertising but do PM me if you'd like some info :)

    Turnout rugs in the stable?

Every 4 wears?!? I'd be divorced by week 2

    Turnout rugs in the stable?

Another who leaves on if they're wet - best drying rack in the world! I do change it over at night simply because I don't like to wash turnouts unless I have to as they're never quite as waterproof again. A rug mender told me that urine doesn't do the fabric, waterproofing and stitches much...

1A Day In The Life Of A Work Rider - Another Pishy Wet Day With A Ping!

Loved the write-up and that video! Will go and have a look at the FB page now ... PS I think I'd prefer one of these saddles, though ...
