are zebra fly rugs a modern invention or as old as the hills?

I've read an abridged version of the story. Just a thought, do you think it might be vampire bats they were being protected from?

    What an insulting report!!

I read it yesterday and was livid. I bet he wouldn't have written like that about sailing for example. It was just plain rude, I showed it to a sport loving friend though he knows nothing about horses and he too was shocked. The DT is pretty middle class, they wouldn't have to look too hard to...

best products to strengthen horses hooves!!

It's sold as flax for human consumption, and yes I think you can put it on your muesli :D I'll keep a lookout for your updates if you try it.

best products to strengthen horses hooves!!

It made enough of a difference for my farrier to ask what I was feeding when I first put them on it. Only downside is that ponies arrive with me having neat manes and all look like punks within a few weeks, but may just be my poor grooming :D

best products to strengthen horses hooves!!

I've been giving mine micronised linseed for about 5 years now, it's marvellous stuff for feet and coat quality.

    Should I get a shetland?

I've had no more problems with my Shetlands and electric fencing than any other pony. The connie is worse as he just jumps to wherever he wants to be. If the current owner says he's fine with tape then I'd believe her.

The pregnancy boredom is getting too much

My daughter's expecting in Sept. She has never understood my love for small ponies but has now claimed Lily, my "BOGOF" shetland as hers. Lily may not know it yet but she's going places as soon as the homemade jockey can sit upright :)

    Shopping help, thin gilet

Joules Minx are thin, I'm considering one but doesn't have the phone pocket.

    Shopping help, thin gilet

It's really hard to find a nice gilet so I'm waiting for responses with interest. I have an ancient Toggi, it's lightly padded but o.k. unless weather is really hot, with good pockets and an inside one for your phone. Every potential replacement is too hot, never has the inside zipped pocket or...

    America v UK

I use it for emphasis I think, not blame. I/he/she fell off can describe anything minor or serious but saying "thrown" implies force i.e. a bad fall.

    Who knows about hoof boots?

I sent pictures to Hoofboutique, my first try wasn't good enough and LH sent instructions of exactly where I should measure. I have a connie in Easiboot trails, I find these a faff to put on but they fit really well and he's on his second pair. Shettie X drove in Equine fusions, again never...

    Grazon & composting times?

I thought it was several months, but I think the information is all in the instructions that are stuck to the bottle.

Oh gosh, where to start. Trying to buy a pony for a shy 11 year old!

As you are in the Highlands, look on the Eriskay Pony Society website. They are tough, hardy and versatile, child friendly and a bit smaller than most Highlands so easier on little legs. There is a sales/loan list or worth putting a wanted ad on. I bought an 8 year old ex broodmare for my...

Oh gosh, where to start. Trying to buy a pony for a shy 11 year old!

Would the RS owner be able to source a suitable pony? She must have good contacts and knows your daughter's level of ability?

No useful advice but hope he's done nothing worse and feels better after the weekend.

    Schooling in a field

I use an area at the top of one of my two paddocks, it's the flattest but as others here only during drier months. One word of caution, I wouldn't keep tack in a shed, take it home if you cannot access anything more secure.

    Hot Air Balloon

No I think you are justified in feeling annoyed. I was walking my dog (not current one) at a well Known beauty spot near me when a balloon appeared. He was obviously much lower than he wanted to be and put the burners on. My poor dog was absolutely terrified and bolted, fortunately away from any...

Is there (or should there be) a ceiling weight to horse riding

I agree, which is why I was rather sharp in my earlier post. I attended the Southern Dales show recently. There was a woman there who arrived with a lovely grey mare, the pony was grossly overweight and so was the rider. She entered 3 classes and came last in each, the pony just couldn't keep up...

For the love of god, don't sniff anything!!! 🤣

I hope you feel better after a good rest. :) I picked up a small brown bottle at my mother's years ago, had no idea what it was so took the top off and had a deep sniff. It was smelling salts and I almost passed out.

Is there (or should there be) a ceiling weight to horse riding

I would question whether you can be a good rider if you are very overweight. How can you effectively use your thigh muscles if they are encased in flab? Or have any core strength with a a vast belly? But I'm not sure it's a question of weight, it's more about weight distribution and body...

    Would you....? (Hypothetical!)

No I wouldn't and would say why; I would aim to be tactful but my efforts at tact are rarely successful. Making a weight limit clear on the advert or phone enquiry would hopefully filter out most unsuitable buyers. If we ever sold our Dales mare I suspect it would be an issue, they certainly...

You have my sympathy, it must be incredibly hard managing a laminitic in the current weather conditions.

    Advice on new horse please

I'm pleased for you, I hope things continue to go well. I think you should persevere, reading your earlier posts makes me wonder if you'd do yourself down even if you sold this mare and bought a slower model. It really does all sound o.k. and any glitches you are dealing with.

My foal has been born Grey

Congratulations, s/he is lovely and the mare has a sweet face. My opinion would be that your foal has the blagdon colouring but the goggles suggest he will grey out.

How many livery yards have closed in your area?

Within 5 miles I can think of 3 big yards and 2 smaller ones that have gone, only one for multiple building, the others cutting back to private use or one/two large houses. What I find equally sad is that I very rarely see kids out hacking, certainly never in groups having a hooley and my area...

Losing Hope- please offer any advice

There's a 14.1hh Welsh D on NFED for 4.5K who looks nice. Sounds like a typical Welshie, as in not the easiest but he ticks all your requirements. He's in Cullompton, you're probably in Cumbria!

Losing Hope- please offer any advice

It's very tough at the moment. Could you find a reputable dealer so that you could view 2 or 3 on the same day? No idea what you are looking for but if it's general riding horse/pony suitable as an all rounder it might be feasible.
