    Feed Advice

Just a quick thought on a slight tangent... As he is relatively unknown to you - is it possible he may have fluke? I have struggled with one of mine on and off for a while, between us and the vets we went through every idea we could think of.. Then I learned what liver fluke can do to them...

would mud fever cause the whole leg to swell ??

Yes, mud fever can and will do this.... for every body saying get the vet in, I am pretty certain they have already been as the OP states the horse is already on antibiotics! OP keep in touch with the vet and they will be able to advise the best course of action if this doesn't start to clear...

Come to think of it, one of my foals last year has the nickname Audrey - I guess it sounds normal to me now!!!! :-D

    Really, really wrong horse names...

A good friend of mine (who may have already posted, sorry couldn't manage all 26 pages!) has a very good bunch of stable names! All of these she has bred and named herself and all have proper names, but she has a philippa, Rupert, Barry, Dave, barnabus and Sophie - horses she has had not named...

    Many Norfolk people on here?

Me too... well currently in gloucestershire but from south Norfolk (near Diss) and mum and dad also have a little place at west runton, have spent so much of my time enjoying the riding round there! Glos just can't compare, especially lacking in beaches!!

    Futurity results

Some very good results, well done to all those involved! Ciss - does this mean that progeny by ungraded stallions entered in 2011, 2010, 2009, etc will also have their records wiped from the system in 2013 if the sire has not been graded? It doesn't apply to mine so I haven't read the rules...

    Foal STILL scouring. Any ideas?

To be fair though, a whole tube of Panacur is the recommended dose per 90kg bodyweight for a scouring foal of this age - we had one this year who was reasonably bright in herself but just continually scouring. Tried a whole range of supportive treatments but only really dried up after this...

Foal born with no eyes :-(

It's totally different though, isn't it - a foal born blind as opposed and elderly horse losing its sight. I have to say, I'm not sure I would put any of mine through being blind but having said that I knew a working shire whose sight gradually deteriorated to the point of near blindness - his...

Who's entered for futurity this year...

Very true - although foal more important and he's all booked and entered... yearling more out of curiosity really, imo he is maturing quite nicely - and I would be interested to see how this years comments compare to last year! (Or maybe I have too much time on my hands!!! ) :)

    feed question

The D & H does have a higher digestable energy content compared to the Spillers tho, you could always try the D&H stud diet, which is different again! I have used both in the past, not a huge amount to choose between the stud diet and the Spillers imo!

Foal born with no eyes :-(

Pts without a shadow of a doubt, extremely upsetting for all involved but the only viable option. Sadly the small but very real risk you take when breeding any livestock.:(

    Introducing my WUAS foal!

Thanks all! Very kind! Rose tinted specs aside - I shall watch with interest as he develops, currently it would be very appealing to send her back to WUAS next year!

    Introducing my WUAS foal!

Very pleased with this chap, born May 2nd 2012 - my mare has done me absolutely proud again! I asked her to cook me a neddy that could jump like his father, gallop like his mother and have just a touch of movement like his grandad and uncle! :D Okay, at not quite four weeks old, I will...

Wish Upon a Star... Opinions please

Really really like WUAS, met him a couple of times and am always taken by him. I used him last year on a nice TB mare and can honestly say that so far, I am thrilled with the result (born last week!). I have a lovely chestnut colt, and although he still has a little unfolding to do, his...

    Gelding? Average costs please?

Where abouts are you? Mine was one of five 10month olds done on the same day just two weeks ago, we did knock them out briefly and they were all covered with abics and tet - best price our vets could do for the job lot was £280... we did ring round on this occasion and no other vets were...

What would you do - dog on ice

I'd like to think I'd be sensible enough to not get myself into serious danger by going after my dogs.. but in reality I don't think I could stand by and watch. Agree with keeping on lead or away from ice, but when mishaps happen they can catch you out pretty quickly! Back in the 2007...

Grazing Muzzles and Hay - Numpty Question!

My boy manages just fine with his muzzle on... but I'd let him figure out how to use it on grass first otherwise he will probably get very frustrated! Amymay, I was concerned it wasn't safe at first, but having watch my pony master collecting a few strands of hay thru the hole I'm not worried...

    graze on or readigrass

I use Just Grass from D&H but who makes Graze On, and roughly how much is it per 20kg bag? Sounds interesting if it is a mix of grasses!
