    Selling my best pal

I only told folks by pm, but four months ago I found him in his field with others, no water and no food. He was at least 75kg underweight. Spinal processes showing. I arranged for that to be to be sorted: they would have died in that hot weather if I had not alterered things, and aranged for...

The only thing that kept me going was that if I did not keep going it could be worse for him, abandoned by me, his only friend. I am still in shock, and there are so many messages to send out and reply to. First amazing person was the knackerman, he was calm and very nice, he was a horse...

The forum is for advice and for discussion, its public, its not the right place for re homing one horse. There are other places. I started the post to get some input that might help, and it has done, given me contacts and ideas, but its not a re homing site.

    Selling my best pal

OK, folks to cut along story short, I got the horse in to temporary accomodation, he had been fed, watered and monitored during the interim. The place he went to was very local and it was very temporary, I got him fit and got him fed but I could not find a new home, they wanted him out, they...

Its not harsh, The poster thought the horse was bolting, but it is very unlikely, a horse which is bolting will run in to a brick wall. It is not likely she would be here to tell this story. I have never been on a bolting horse [and I have ridden over 2000 horses] one or two gave me concern...

Odd feet on new horse... opinions please.

Look at Rockley Farm blogs, you will find all horse have different tolerance levels, so that some need particular care, diet, managment and others need no special diet. Many are NOT good with alfalfa, some dont mind Many can take some molasses, some are crippled if put out on grass, and can...

Odd feet on new horse... opinions please.

I have been feeding horse for racing and so on for aprrox 50 years, in the early days it was "oats, bran, chaff [THAT IS HAY WHICH WE CHOPPED] and "Equivite" for competition horse, private liveries. One thing I noticeD when I fed cheap unbranded feeds, was that after 2 weeks they lost their...

A pouty post from me - but I'm so depressed about this...

I give my boy a nice massage two or three times a week, he likes the attention, I use a massage gadget [a bit like a body brush with rubber knobbly bits] and also the flat of my hand to feel for stiff muscles. If you run one hand down both sides of the spine, light but firm watch his ears, if...

A pouty post from me - but I'm so depressed about this...

I would ask the former owners to come over right now and see how they get on with him, I know it is difficult but tbh I would have avoided calling someone naive unless they made a rather obvious statement. They saw you ride when you bought it, so if they had serious reservations they had the...

Dropping the reins and taking feet out of the stirrups is NOT recommended at flat out gallop, it is for after work and when horse is walking quietly home, aslo helps if rider is pro standard, is fit and has perfect balance!

    Dump question clipping/rug..

When I started with clipping I made sure the horse was free of grease and the blades sharp, I use small clippers [mosel] which would take along time with a full size horse but are quiet and easy to use. The bits that sweat are under the bridle behind the ears, between legs behind, under the...

    Ex racer bolts on hacks

P.S you will never see a race professional leaning back and hauling on the mouth of a racehorse, there is a certain technique to use all your body wight to counter-balance the forward impetus of the horse, but I doubt if your avearge rider is suddenly going to learn how to do it when she thinks...

    Ex racer bolts on hacks

Your horse did not "bolt" then stop at the top of a bridleway, he just probably just went at a much faster pace than you wanted. I would avoid going out with you boss, and not take the loan on until you are happy. It is not a good idea to canter on a bridleway when out of control, I know you...

The horse has not been re-schooled, and you are not an experienced rider........... I think this is a classic scenario, and why people are often advised against taking ex racehorses, and other horses they are not skilled enough to ride. The french link bit may be fairly severe, the egg butt is...

    Loaner insuring for LOU/death etc?

I would think it is fairly normal, but tbh there have been plenty cases wher the loaner agrees to insure then does not, so that the owner gets a horse back, in a bad way, and no cover. The owner is entitled to make whatever conditions he wants, you are not under obligation to accept the loan...

    Outshine or Alfa Oil?

Thats it, £30 for 20kgs delivered to your door, I feed 50gms in summers and 100-150 in winter, best stuff ever. I am currently also feeding 500 gms of chaff + dry nonmolassed s/beet and Benevit Advanced 25gms. Easy to adjust, but as it is a concentrated diet when dry [it must be soaked] make...

    Scotland: ownership dispute

I have him back, and now I have to find a new home for him. I will send a letter to her solicitor asking her to re-pay the "deposit" money or I will seek redress though the courts for all expenses incurred untill I have found a new home for him, and the difference between sale value last year...

Help - Incident tonight. Can police protect our horses?

oh dear, talk about mountains and molehills, forget it.... the police wont do anything, it has to be persistant, even then they wont do anything unless it falls in to a crime situation. As a child, I used to go into fields and talk to horses, and it was not with evil intent.

    Rain scald prevention advice

I am a great believer in micronised linseed, it helps joints, hooves and skin, and condition, 50gms for a horse, translates as 15-20gm for a shetland I would think. I tend to go with the "making friends" by stabling with a friend or two, keep to a quiet routine, and just talk to them . One day...

Bright ideas required - Stable keeps flooding!!

It depends, but I had a minor but regular flooding due to people washing horses outside my stable, I bought a bag of concrete and laid it outside the door to divert the flow, it was only 2 inches high, but is worked, obviously make sure door still opens. Or put a piece of wood at the entrance...
