Your accounts of 'why the hell did I do that' falls!

Demonstrating to a group of 12 yr old schoolboys how to jump on bareback. Though it was a clever idea to chose a smallish, narrow pony to ensure I accomplished this gracefully and didn't end up stuck half on half off, put some extra spring in my leap, went up and straight over the other side...

    Dramatic hack!

We used to regularly encounter swans, going round the edge of a lake in a country park. Always on the way home so we had no choice but to go past. Many shut your eyes, hang on to a bit of mane and kick moments happened, specially when they had cygnets, but once they would NOT get off the path so...

The x ray following my 'something of nothing' fall.

Wow! Poor you. Any idea how long before you can weight bear?

Do I really have to go back to that place again?

The short answer is no, you don't have to go. And you don't have to make any future appointments, its your life, your mind and if you don't feel it would be beneficial then don't go.

***Daughter and Dolly - update - it's been two and a half years!!!!***

I love your updates and how much has daughter grown?? That old pic of Dolly, she looks like she has you all sussed but the more recent pics her expression is completely different, they are a team now. Just lovely to see. And as for you, how about some hacking with the pair of them? No...

Has anyone on here done an Open University Degree?

I am one course away fom honours now, it's taken 6 yrs working full time and some courses are easier than others in terms of commitment levels and the amount of required reading. I am quite fed up with it now and admit o doing the bare minimum just to get it over with. Being an impoverished...

what to do in the new forest?

Some good places to visit Burley, quaint village with donkeys, ponies, pubs and witches. Lots of good walks. High Corner Inn, old pub down a battered track in the middle of nowhere. Hitching rail for horses. Also to be found at the White Buck near Burley, superb food. Lymington, nice old town...

Show me where you hack - Is mine the best in the world?!

When I lived in Hong Kong, we hacked out all, over the place, though tiny Chinese villages and paddy fields, over huge mountains up to the catchments (huge open concrete drains) which we galloped alongside, into the no mans land near the border anda best of all up to hidden rock pools where we...

    Riding hat in hand luggage?

Yes you can, it will fit in easily to hand luggage. Have taken mine on Ryanair and Easyjet in my hand luggage. Made the mistake of putting it in my hold baggage on the way home, along with my chaps and joddie boots and EJ managed to lose it!!! The only time EVER that I have had a bag go...

Just being nosey.. what level rider do you think you are?

If we accept that horses continue to teach us and that we never know it all ...... doesn't that make us ALL novices in a way, just at different levels?

Hacking Alone - Need Some Success Stories!

You could also work now on making him take the lead when you go out with others, then he has the reassurance of his "herd" with him. Even if this means him just having his nose in front to start with. If he is truly scared rather than just being stubborn, you can get one of the others to come...

    Cats Fowling

We have same problem with next door's cat. It's deaf so sonic deterrents do not work. Best solution - electric thing that squirts water at it, motion sensitive but no good if it freezes. Second best - Silent Roar, kind of pellets that you scatter. Clogs up the lawn mower something chronic...

    Constructive Critism appreciated

No Abo was after my time, we had the Borneo stallions (who were all crazy and used for polo twice a week) and the TBs plus a handful of slightly bigger Australian ponies. When I first went there the mules were still there too and every year at one of the Jockey Club shows there was a mule race...

    Constructive Critism appreciated

Oooh I used to ride at Lo Wu in the 70s! It looks a bit different now, we didn't have mod cons like floodlights!! Loved it there, we used to take the Borneo stallions out anywhere and everywhere, through tiny villages and paddy fields and usually ended up over the border where we shouldn't be...

But then you'd end up with lots of 'friends' that you don't know but do know that they are liars, why would you want to do that?

how to deal with someone like this...

Why on earth would you (a) add someone on Facebook "at my mum's work" that you don't know or (b) give a monkey's about offending such a person by deleting them? I just don't get it??

    stirrupless riding!

And doing the jumping lane with no stirrups, no reins and a blindfold! On a horse that decided that the 5ft fence of the school was part of the grid? Most entertaining for those watching as we flew over and disappeared down the drop on the other side!! Rewind, maybe you need to let your...

Sharer - would this be viable

I think it sounds reasonable apart from the poo picking. As a sharer I wouldn't mind poo picking on my days but I'd be a bit peeved to be expected to do a whole week's worth!

    Bailing out

The thread about the kids on bolting ponies got me thinking about bailing out. Is this something you were taught? I've been around horses for a very long time and have always been taught/taught others to hang on for grim death. I was bolted with, bareback at age 10 and screamed my head off...

Any East Dorset people who can give me some advice please?

Yes you can ride in Moors Valley but you need a Forestry Commission permit. They really look after the ground there so it's well worth it and you can go through MV across the Verwood Road and into Ringwood Forest which goes on for ever, lovely riding ground with a mixture of stony tracks...

Any East Dorset people who can give me some advice please?

Three Legged Cross is great for livery yards, there are several very close to each other (close to Verwood, Ferndown and Ringwood) and the best hacking imaginable - straight onto the forest, miles and miles with no roads!
