    Piggy March Training

No help but I'm keen to know too!

affording to compete/train - what sacrifices do you make?

I have a really good job. I keep pets at home (with its own expenses including a massive mortgage!) I buy 99% of things for me and the horses 2nd hand. I haven't been on holiday abroad for about 7 years. I have multiple bank accounts and spreadsheets to keep track of everything. I still like to...

Help... give up or keep going

Sell. Life is too short to spend so much emotion and money on a horse you don't enjoy. It's not always love hearts and easy times but you need to really love the horse and the process for the tough times and they need to make you smile.

    Help with BD eligibility please!

Sadly that was what I concluded too, thought I had missed something! It seems harsh when it is one result, only one level higher and 4 years ago... wish I had 1% less now 😕

    Help with BD eligibility please!

Hi all, I'm trying to work out what I am eligible for with BD, if I re-register with my young horse (who hasn't done any affiliated). In total, I have 29 Novice points, 10 Elementary points and 20 Medium points- I last competed affiliated in 2018. I also scored 65.59% and placed 3rd at an Area...

Badminton XC coverage is not live via the BBC red button this year

I have paid for BadmintonTV. I think it's great value for the coverage offered, cheaper compared to going in person and I've already been rewatching 2018 with the subscription which is great.

    Ascott BE90 or Broadway UA90?

I'll go against the grain here... if stepping up or any niggle about height, I would always plump for Broadway. The SJ can be on a slope but is usually flowing and quite straight forwards. The XC is running uphill from the start so you always get nice, positive shots and ride forwards and...

Video Getting more *ping* jumping (or am I worrying unnecessarily?)

Honestly, mine is exactly the same! took him to a hunter trial a fortnight ago and he jumped beautifully, ears pricked and locking onto everything, we got lovely and smooth strides everywhere. I am taking him SJ this week and much as I will try and replicate the feel, I know he will feel flat...

Video Getting more *ping* jumping (or am I worrying unnecessarily?)

My boy is EXACTLY like this! I am used to super sharp, really energetic horses and my lad is the same as as yours. I bred him so he won't be for sale but he definitely isn't the type of horse I would go out and buy. People can keep saying about improving the canter and it has certainly helped...

    Westgate lab- why so pricey?

I used Poo Post for the first time recently and very pleased. I'm sure Westgate are fab too but I'm watching my pennies with multiple horses. I think anyone insinuating dodgy results based on cost of service is on very shaky ground; an expensive service doesn't guarantee quality either.

    Jump saddles for wide/flat backs

I had an absolute table of a horse a few years ago and he had a Pessoa jump that fitted really, really well and was lovely for me to ride in too- I cannot abide blocky, bulky saddles though.

How far to travel in one day?

Little update... We went there and back in one day and it was all absolutely fine 🙂 Managed a 6th place, just 1% off the winner, so very chuffed as everyone in the class was an area winner. Not bad for not having done a test for 5 months and spent the winter hunting instead!

How far to travel in one day?

I'm the same normally but we have qualified for a National competition and my view is, you only live once! I don't know if we'll qualify again so we're going for the experience.

How far to travel in one day?

    Yes, BRC National champs

How far to travel in one day?

there is an arena walk but it’s at 8am… no other arena walks all day. he is generally very laid back and easy to travel, also very fit as done a winter of hunting and was team chasing last weekend and barely broke a sweat. Gah, I cannot decide!

How far to travel in one day?

Thank you. I have been to camps with him and he settled ok but not done just an overnight. My concern if we overnight is what to do with him Sat morning as a long wait before our time.

How far to travel in one day?

I have a dressage competition this weekend, just over 150 miles away and expected travel time is 4 hours. I had booked an overnight stable for Friday, however I’ve just had my time through for Saturday and it is nearly 4pm… Horse is a good traveller and majority of travel is on motorway or...

Does naf oestress cause weight gain

No. You might find your mare puts weight on as a side effect due to being more settled, if the supplement is helping her relax?

Is it possible to compete at a high level whilst working full time not in the horse industry

Dressage is definitely the easier horse sport to climb the levels in my experience. I was competing successfully at Medium without trying too hard, riding 2 horses, working full time and having a good social life. I got up every day at 5.30am to be on board by 6.15 and off by 7am. The most...

Are people still anti buying young horses that have raced?

Their value has definitely gone up, particularly if they are proven retrained and have competition potential. From my personal experience, I wouldn't touch one without back x-rays and scoping for ulcers.

    Insecure seat exercises

A great one I find is to rise for 2 beats and sit for 1 beat, instead of up down up down, making sure your landing is controlled and light and in the middle of the saddle. I do this out hacking and it's amazing how much more thigh burn you get and awareness to keep your weight back and...

Feeding Salt, what do you use ?

I use the asda 2kg table salt bags. Each horse gets about 2 tablespoons a day, just worked up to that gradually and they all eat up no problem. They also have himalayan rock salt licks in their stables and the field, some use them and some don't touch them.

So what has British Eventing done wrong?

I really did want to rejoin BE this season after many years unaffiliated. 3 things now putting me off- Loss of abandonment insurance. Yes, some events are getting their own, but hard to plan that into the season at the moment. Complete mess and confusion of Area Festivals to qualify for...

    Bringing in three

I lead my 3 together, I don't have time to be messing around with multiple trips. Youngster in left hand, older boys in right hand with the herd boss in the middle of the others to help me keep the peace! All works fine and they know the plan when we get to the stables and who goes in first etc.

Remaining (in person) horse sales in Britain

I went to the Brecon sales in December. Mostly young coloured ponies shetlands. Some older, generally rougher, horses that have had a hard life. A handful of Welsh, mostly smaller sections but a few section Ds… mostly uncut. you need a hard heart to walk around the pens, I wanted to buy all of...

I would cancel as more than one person you know have had a bad experience.

Should full livery be charging this?

I wouldn’t expect to be charged on full livery for holding a horse. Yes would expect it on part or DIY.

How much to build an arena?

We just did a 25 x 40 for £18k, all in. We had to use quite a bit of clean stone to build up level as had quite a slope and I don’t have full fencing as that would have added about another £4K. I adore my arena, it rides really well and would have cost double if done by a contractor.

The reviews are all amazing, if I am honest I am put off by the unflattering design; it looks like you are wearing an XL parachute!

Talk to me about stringhalt please

Good luck. my big boy has stringhalt, not noticeable on his movement, really only when you want to pick his back feet up. he is such a super horse, I know it is degenerative, however it tends to be very slow moving. There are so many successful jumping and racing horses with it, it doesn’t...
