Buying unbroken 2/3 year old, hit me with questions to ask

Temperament, temperament, temperament. As someone else already said, this rarely changes. What you see is what you will get.

What to do - too many horses and too little land?

Thanks - that seems to be the overriding message - put in hard-standing!

What to do - too many horses and too little land?

oh thanks. That's an interesting idea about a barn instead of stables. I shall investigate! If you use gates, what happens during firework nights or thunderstorms. That's the only reason I would want to be able to shut mine in securely in a stable. Also interesting to hear what you have used...

What to do - too many horses and too little land?

Thanks for replying. That's encouraging news. I'm planning woodcip turnout too - it worked well for my previous place. I'll look at track systems too.

What to do - too many horses and too little land?

Thanks for replying. I'm planning something similar. At my current place I scraped off the topsoil and then put chalk down, compacted the chalk, then put cushionride on top. It's great so hoping to do similar. It's encouraging to hear you manage two on one acre. Thanks

What to do - too many horses and too little land?

That is SO kind. Thank you - how generous. Unfortunately, I'm down south otherwise I'd be very keen.

What to do - too many horses and too little land?

Thanks. That really useful when would be the best time to reseed? Is there any point in reseeding in September before the autumn flush of grass?

What to do - too many horses and too little land?

Thanks for posting this. I won't have an arena, sadly. Have to sort out a number of planning issues - current stables are illegally placed and current renter is taking them with her. I think I'll have to have mobile stables to start with until I get proper planning, but at least I can tow them...

What to do - too many horses and too little land?

Thanks for that detailed reply. That's really useful. I'm trying to find somewhere to stash the horses for a couple of months but no luck so far. The land has not been poo picked in monthe grrrr. How long do you think I need to leave it having cleared the field of the poo to avoid picking up...

What to do - too many horses and too little land?

Thanks for replying. I'll look at the Equicentral system. I might see if I can find a local livery for the connie over the winter. It'll do him good to see a bit more of the world anyway.

What to do - too many horses and too little land?

Thanks. That's a really useful post. I'm trying to find somewhere for the horses to go for a few weeks while we do the work - no luck so far. The previous user of the land did not poo pick, it seems. There's also an enormous manure heap from her stables - I'm guessing several years worth. I'm...

What to do - too many horses and too little land?

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm trying to find some land nearby that I could rent for a couple of months so I can get on with sorting the land. No luck so far. The connie pony in this post is the spitting image of the pony in your avatar!

Thanks. I'll have a look at the Equicentral system and mats

What to do - too many horses and too little land?

Thanks for replying. Good idea about the dry surfaced bit. I might scrape off the top surface of mud from one bit and put down wood chip to help us get through winter

What to do - too many horses and too little land?

I think I'm going to find myself with one horse too many soon. I'm moving to a house with 3.25 acres and have 3 small horses. Two x 15 hh small WBs and a 14.2 connie. The land I'm going to is in a pretty poor state - needs spraying for weeds, harrowing, rolling, re-seeding and re-fencing. It's...

    Just a happy hacker??

Maybe the subject of the original post is at the start of her horse journey. Unknown to you, she might be reading books, watching videos, consulting a forum for advice, reflecting on each ride and how it went and then how to do it better. Lessons aren't the only way to learn - maybe lessons are...

I found something worse to ride in than my saddle!

Me too. If it was good enough for Reine Klimke, it's good enough for me!

I found something worse to ride in than my saddle!

A Torsion is the only saddle my young horse is happy in - he has a back conformation that is very difficult to fit and have spent ££££ trying tree-ed. I have had to learn to be a much more balanced rider to make a success of the Torsion. There's very little support for the rider in terms of...

Laser surgery for sarcoids - any experiences please

Oh, I see. Thanks for showing me that. I see what you mean now. I've not had a horse with a sarcoid before so not familiar with the different types. I shall do some research!

Laser surgery for sarcoids - any experiences please

Sorry if I'm being stupid but did you mean to say it DOES look like a flat sarcoid? Or it looks like a sarcoid but not a flat one? Does anyone think it might be a wart?

Laser surgery for sarcoids - any experiences please

Here is a photo of the lump. It was hidden in a whorl of fur at the top of his neck. Horse has head up in the photo, if that helps to make sense of the image.

Laser surgery for sarcoids - any experiences please

Thanks for replying. Could you explain banding to me please? I imagined by the sound of "banding" that you would need one that stuck out to wrap a band round??

Laser surgery for sarcoids - any experiences please

Thanks for replying. This is what I find mysterious about my horse's sarcoid. I have not had a horse with a sarcoid before, and only heard of them being on places with less hair, so bellies, genitals, eyes and like yours, muzzles. Sorry to hear more have arrived.

Laser surgery for sarcoids - any experiences please

Thanks for replying. Good idea about the flies. Your horse had 6 weeks box rest! It was a serious op then! We are taking weekly photos and it hasn't grown. Also feeding Sarcex, though I suspect that a herbal remedy might not be up to the job!

Laser surgery for sarcoids - any experiences please

Thanks for replying. I'll get a photo of it and post it. It does look very much like a sarcoid rather than a scar, sadly.

Laser surgery for sarcoids - any experiences please

Thanks for replying. That's not great news that they all came back. I wonder if surgery might be better if lasering leaves such a big hole and isn't that successful.

Laser surgery for sarcoids - any experiences please

Last year when all seemed hopeless with my young horse, I bought a young connie as a plan B. He's proving to be a really nice young chap and is currently away being professionally backed. I had him vetted on purchase by an experienced vet at RVS who failed to spot a sarcoid lurking under his...
