Surviving box rest with a good doer

A hay ball might be an option maybe? I’ve never used one but someone at my yard has one and it looks interesting!

Wishing you all the best for the surgery and box rest, following with interest as also looking at a period of box rest for my big lad.

Aw thank you.. flippin horses eh..! it’s reassuring to have the perspectives from others who have faced similar decisions and good to know that my gut feeling about what to do next aligns with what others would do, if that makes sense.

Thank you so much BBP, that is so helpful. I think we are in a good place rehab-wise with the support of the chiro vet, she is really rehab focused and really proactive in keeping up to date on the latest best practice. The thought of surgery still terrifies me but I think it’s our best option...

    DDFT injury

Thanks so much Elf - that is really important and I think mentally we are there, as in we know it’s going to be a long slog to get the best result. We’re really lucky to have access to a clinician (not our primary care vet) who practiced as a vet, trained as a chiro and really specialises in...

So what has British Eventing done wrong?

There’s stacks of jumping/xc events, 2 phases and derbys etc but the full ODE seems to be a rarity now. Dressage Ireland have also recently introduced some fairly tricky rules around how dressage judges are police checked which is impacting on aff dressage up here too, not sure if it’s a DI...

So what has British Eventing done wrong?

It’s interesting to see how things are unfolding atm. I’m in no position to event this year anyway - and I’m not ever going to set the eventing world on fire. Over here, we have much fewer in the way of unaff ODEs - we often have 2 phase events, but there is maybe less conflict between...

    DDFT injury

Thanks so much BBP and muddy_grey, it’s good to hear your direct experiences of similar types of thing. I think we will probably go the surgery route- on MP’s advice I’ve asked them for a detailed estimate so we can just make sure we are in a position to proceed etc.

An early "Next weekend" thread - a hot one!

Might be lucky and have a wee spin on my friend’s little mare, aside from that no plans sadly! Bit of an update on my boy here - any insights welcomed. https://forums.horseandhound.co.uk/threads/ddft-injury.819437/

    DDFT injury

No no thank you so much for sharing that! Just as important to us as rehabbing the injury is making sure we give him the best opportunities to be the best he can be overall; it’s something we had been working on with our chiro vet as he is a big horse and quite weak behind – we’d been making...

    DDFT injury

As some of you folks know already, our lovely big horse has been having some issues of late. As a bit of a timeline, just to give full context: 6th March he pulled a shoe; with hindsight we think this might have been the start of our issues. He was sound at the time but farrier did comment that...

Made it down for our appt - 8am at a clinic almost 3 hours away, so a 4am alarm… dropped him off, went to a nice tack shop, wandered round some shops, had a nap in a Tesco car park then collected him again, back at the yard for about 6pm. Should get report back on Monday or Tuesday.

So initially she felt it was around fetlock initially based on what she could see and a bit of swelling etc, but given we are now quite a few weeks in to this whole saga she thinks next logical step is MRI - reasoning behind that is that he is basically exactly the same as at the start (and that...

Blaaaaah posting in here because I need to rant / moan. Two weeks today since the big guy last saw vet and he’s still not right - she’s booking him in for MRI and based on how he is, and how he has responded to nerve blocks etc - is concerned about the soft tissues in his feet - I’m struggling...

En route home from Millstreet now. Bit of a drive ahead 😂 Lovely morning watching some of the xc and the 4* sj. The sj was great, the course was tricky and twisty - some super riding but not many clears! Laura C was last to go and was sitting on her dressage score, she could have afforded...

Sneaking in here first since I think for a lot of us, the weekend starts tomorrow?! This week I’ve been doing a bit of this again: Monday did 15 mins walking in arena, yesterday did 20. Day one he felt a bit uppity but was totally chilled last night. Going to do a bit of road walking...

    Is Everyone Staying at Home

Right now I am sitting on the ground in the field, while the big lad has his first proper taste of grass in weeks. Bliss ☺️ He can have half an hour or so out, as much as we like our vet I don’t really want to add any other ailments to the mix 🤦🏻‍♀️

Had a lovely ride on a friend’s horse; she’s a 5yo IDx, gorgeous little mare, very eager to please but easily distracted! She’s only about 15.2 so much smaller than the big yoke (he’s 17hh) yet somehow I look smaller on her than him 🤣
