    Weed prevention for arenas?

Our arena has started to get something of a crop of grass growing on it and it is slightly driving me mad! I pull them up whenever I can and have rabbit proofed the arena as best I can, plus I level it regularly but still they appear! Any hints and tips to prevent weeds?!

How do you move your large bale haylage?

I have about 12 old bales of haylage from the last two years that need to be moved into a different part of the field as they have gone off. What does everyone use to move their large bales? We want to hire something to move them as doing it ourselves without the proper equipment is a real...

    broken collarbone-success stories please!

Sorry to hear that you've broken your collarbone. As frustrating as it is to be out of action and not able to do everything you want to, can I sound a small note of caution about pushing for surgery? The point of a consultant orthopaedic surgeon is to do the right thing for the specific...

How do you rabbit proof fence the gates of an arena?

We have quite a lot of rabbits who currently appear to be burrowing into the arena and we are going to put up some rabbit fencing around the arena. However, I'm not sure how we are going to do the gates - they look like this:- How do you fence this bit? Do you let the fencing trail...

Anyone with an arena - what do you do about autumn leaves?!

We had our arena built this spring and it is sand with rubber topping. I'm just wondering what everyone does with their arenas to clear them of autumn leaves. Do you do anything at all? I assume they will just degrade if left but I'm not sure how best to clear them?! Any advice welcome!

How to dispose of big bale haylage that has gone off?

I've got a fair few big bale haylage bales that were from last year and some of them have got damaged and gone mouldy. What is the best way to dispose of them? They are very large and heavy and we don't have an easy way of moving them at present!

Update: deep breath, pulling socks up and continuing to sparkle.

Sorry to hear your sad news but you were the best thing that could have happened to that horse - noone else would have achieved as much and been so thorough and patient with him. Best of luck with the new one :)

Mud fever already - what works?

My mud fever routine is well-established having a chestnut with one white leg that religiously gets it every year (for the last 10 years!) and it is really awful when he gets it as it is very sore for him and we end up very grumpy with each other - him because his leg hurts and I am prodding it...

Thanks to all for arena advice - it's finally done!

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice about arenas - ours is finally finished today! Just needs a little rain before we can get riding on it and typically none forecast but that doesn't make it less exciting! The build was really well run and efficient, would highly recommend. A few...

What to do with topsoil from arena build?

Our arena build started today (yay!) and we are going to have a fair bit of topsoil (about 200 tonnes) from the groundworks. We can landscape it into our fields if need be but I wondered if there is anyone who would actually want it as I remember when we renovated our last house that buying...

Recommend me an instructor near Banbury/Oxford?

We are starting our arena build on Monday (could not be more excited!) and I'm wondering if I can find an instructor who might be prepared to come and give us a few lessons at home as got three horses and can only transport two at a time. I would be happy to have someone separate for flatwork...

    In praise of orange cats...

I am tediously trying to revise for a post graduate exam today and it's been great being at home as my lovely old orange Maine **** cat has been keeping me company very faithfully. I've had him nearly 9 years now (rescue cat) and its been nice looking back at some of my old photos of him and...

    re-seeding,best time to do it?

I've been talking to our farmer next door about this and his advice was that for the grass seed to grow and not be wasted, the temperature needs to be consistently above 10C for 10 days in order for the grass to grow properly. We're going to wait until the end of the month as there's always the...

Poached fields - what to do?

In the bad weather, our fields became a total bog and the horses have poached them pretty badly, especially around the gateways and fence lines. We have summer paddocks to use which have been rested but I was wondering what everyone is doing with their winter paddocks, to repair the poached...

Who has a Charles Britton arena?

Thanks all for your feedback - very excited, can't wait! :) I postponed making a decision for the moment and kept my little grey filly - the plan is to see over the summer as we are stupidly busy with work and so haven't yet made a final decision.

Horses at home - teenager would like to help out, any thoughts?

I've got my three horses at home and it's been a bit of a slog this winter as only just moved to the area and quite a demanding new job. We've managed but have been keen to get some extra help however found it hard to get a groom in the middle of winter. Our neighbour has recommended a...

Who has a Charles Britton arena?

We have planning permission and are getting set to put in an arena in a few weeks (very exciting!!! :)). We are probably going to go with Charles Britton and I wonder if anyone had any experience of them in terms of the build experience and also the finished arena? Any thought welcome -...

As Valentines day is coming - gold star to partners etc

Lovely post, OP :) My husband has been a total legend. He isn't horsey at all but has moved out into the countryside with me to a farm, coped with all the mud, learned how to do the horses from scratch and generally been wonderful. During the last 5 weeks, he has held the fort single-handed...

Not really CR but if you fancy a giggle/schadenfreude....

The moral of the story is to bring your grey filly home before the bad weather and thank god for lovely neighbours with tractors, waterproof clothing and a good sense of humour! http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?646182-Unsafe-fun-in-the-wind-aka-the-flying-field-shelter!

Unsafe fun in the wind - aka the flying field shelter!

My day started well today - I'm on annual leave so I got in my Christmas shopping and brought my little grey filly, Wanda, home from her training yard for her Christmas holidays before the bad weather started. I thought I'd put the boys in to keep the filly company and to get them out of...

Choosing between horses - heart, head or Halling?

Halling is ungenuine in that he will sometimes jump the moon and absolutely love it, then other days he comes out in a wilful frame of mind and he will not go over a pole on the ground. He was gelded late at 4 years old and he very much sees himself as his own person - I'd describe him as a...

Choosing between horses - heart, head or Halling?

Thanks to all who have replied. I am very torn about this... :( I have been super impressed by my filly and she hasn't put a foot wrong since I bought her. She ticks all of the boxes - little, cute, grey, willing, good keen jumper. She is so straightforward that I have every confidence that...

Choosing between horses - heart, head or Halling?

Some of you may remember I had a little liver chestnut ex-racehorse staying with me for a while called Halling, who I wanted to buy but was sold to someone else for a fair bit of money (more than I thought he was worth). He has come up for sale again, due to owner pregnancy, and I have the...

What to do with unwanted hay?

I've just moved house and inherited a field shelter full of small bales of hay from the previous owners who used it for their alpacas. I've ordered in my haylage for the year - always feed haylage as have Thoroughbreds and they keep their weight better on this - so I have no use for the hay...
