Ideas on managing a fat companion shetland?

That he is!! Seems to have got the hang of the muzzle now and I'm starting to not feel too bad about it. It's only when he follows me around and rubs his head on me wanting it off that I feel guilty but I'm trying to be matter of fact about it!

Laminitis caught early - how long before grass?

Really interesting seeing some of these posts about their mini's suffering from Cushings. My greedy sod of a mini doesn't seem footy or sore in any way currently, he hasn't got the cresty neck or fat pads that are apparently symptoms for Cushings but I did have to clip him out and I think if I...

Am I being unreasonable to sell daughters pony?

How big is the pony? I'd get a confident little rider to bring the pony on and let your daughter watch. That may then inspire her to want to do the same because of having a bit of a competition.

Arlo, is there a reasonable explanation for sightings?

    Any news for Arlo yet?

Ideas on managing a fat companion shetland?

Thank you, it definitely was, he pulled it down in several places and I could see him flinching to the zap but ignoring it.

Ideas on managing a fat companion shetland?

That's a pretty good idea. Wouldn't work in this case sadly, I used the electric fencing to split the inside of the shelter in half so they both had space in there plus it goes all around the outside but in a way to make sure he can get to the trough and so can my mare as well. However, I've...

Ideas on managing a fat companion shetland?

I've made the decision on the electric fencing now but thank you for the suggestions! I literally watched him getting zapped as he pushed the posts down, he doesn't care! My mare runs just at the sound of the clicking, she wouldn't dream of going near it, I've never seen a horse not care about...

Ideas on managing a fat companion shetland?

I've given up. He's got his muzzle back on and he can sulk all he likes!

Ideas on managing a fat companion shetland?

There are three strands of it :( I am reluctant to spend more money on it!

Ideas on managing a fat companion shetland?

It's an outside track so tethering wouldn't work. I can't use wooden posts as the field is rented and I don't want to fork out for more than I have to for a companion on loan. The electric is completely taut all round, three strands of it too.

Ideas on managing a fat companion shetland?

Put him back in last night and saw him get zapped and run off so I know it's working. However, found he had escaped again this morning. I just don't think he cares about being zapped, he just pushes the posts down. :(

Ideas on managing a fat companion shetland?

Oh, the earth stake it comes with isn't even half a meter I don't think!

Ideas on managing a fat companion shetland?

I need another battery otherwise I would use both! I'm so mad at the little sod. I'm not sure what to do, he hates the muzzle and he used to be fine to catch but I can't even catch him now even when I'm not actually going to put the muzzle on! :( I've read that the earthing stake also plays a...

I don't have the option for mains. I have another energiser that's 0.6 joules though?

Ideas on managing a fat companion shetland?

So I've tried Rutland energiser which is 0.25 Joules and 2.5km multi-wire fence coverage with a 12v battery. Worked for one night but found he had escaped this morning. :(

Ideas on managing a fat companion shetland?

I have the Tractor Factory Shire 12v energiser and a 12v battery. No idea what ones are good or not though!

Ideas on managing a fat companion shetland?

I do two strands but might try three. Not sure how powerful it is actually. Charging it up tonight and will try again tomorrow!

Ideas on managing a fat companion shetland?

Will have a look. He does call a little when I take my mare out but he isn't that bothered. The track would work as he could still be near her while she is in the middle, it's keeping him in it that's the issue!

Ideas on managing a fat companion shetland?

Any fencing won't work. He jumps electric fencing whether he can get over it or not so it ends up being pulled down anyway or he charges through it. He's quite attached to my mare so the moment she wanders away, that's when he pulls the fencing down. It would have to be permanent fencing which I...

Never heard of it, will it make him skinny? Haha!

Ideas on managing a fat companion shetland?

He either jumps over the fencing or charges through! I'd be worried about tethering as I wouldn't want my mare to get tangled up. I only rent the fields so I don't think I could do anything more permanent :(

Ideas on managing a fat companion shetland?

He's just getting fatter! I tried him in a track around my mares field, he just pulled it down, even snapped one of the posts! He's now in a muzzle and I watched him for a bit, I could hear him pulling up a fair bit of grass through it. I saw some people on old threads have no issues leaving it...

Acavallo gel type pads - are they worth it?

Is that with the gel pad? As the pad is probably about 5mm thick so I didn't think it would change the fit that much!

Acavallo gel type pads - are they worth it?

The saddle is perfect, it's checked every 6 months by a very good saddler fitter, I could ride in it without a saddle pad and it doesn't slip about. She isn't uncomfortable but she is sensitive and I was hoping I could get something that will have shock absorbing features and evens out pressure...

Acavallo gel type pads - are they worth it?

Thanks sbloom, really helpful! I found with Sheepskin half pads or saddle pads just made the saddle not fit. It seemed too tight or was just balancing on top. I bought a lovely Le Mieux half pad and I couldn't even get the girth onto the first hole!

    Slowing trot tempo.

I was always taught to rise higher to slow the trot down so when I am up, I am basically above the pommel standing straight. It has always worked for me. You could also try counting in the speed you want like "1, 2, 1, 2" as you rise and sit.

She's beautiful and I definitely vote for Frenchy for her name!

He got the better of me today ...

It's a step forward at the pure fact you got on. But I do want to ask, why do you own him if you are scared to ride him? I understand people form bonds/get attached, I am exactly the same. My mare scared me at first and I'm stubborn, I wouldn't give up but that was because of my own...

Acavallo gel type pads - are they worth it?

Hi all! I like the sound of these pads for shock absorbing/even pressure etc but I was wondering if it is worth it? If the saddle is flocked with real wool which is meant to be shock absorbing anyway and it fits, is a gel pad needed? I'm only interested as my mare is sensitive anyway and I just...

    PSSM, any experts?

This is what I had read too. 2000iu for maintenance I believe. In reference to the double amount thing, I worked out how much it is daily and it is incredibly expensive, it just looks cheap from the outset, very deceiving! I worked out that, based on the horse getting 10,000iu, a 500g bag of...
