    Liquid brewers yeast

I'll also add my uncle used to feed it to pigs years ago but pigs stomach anything and it was for growing. Don't want massively fat horses!!

    Liquid brewers yeast

Ive fed brewers yeast to my horses past and present. We collect brewers grain each week from the local brewery for our cattle. Was chatting to him today and mentioned I fed powder Brewers yeast. He asked if I could feed the live liquid yeast he chucks away and what the difference were. I don't...

    Horse insurance

I'm glad you did bump it as I asked the same. After reading into it they cover no illness of any type or death. It's purely accident and life saving treatments so if your horse falls and impales itself etc. No leg sprains or strains, colic etc. For that reason I stuck with my public liability...

What do your 14.2hh cob types weigh?

My friends new vet would have a fit reading this. Think no pony of 14.2 (doesn't take bone into consideration) should weigh more than 450kg. He weighed hers with a tape going over the bloody withers may I add at 600kg and had a go at her 😂. Needed less to say go on body scoring more than tapes...

    Cushings update

Said I'd let people know and I'm very happy to say his re test after 1/4 tablet a day means his level is now 19 instead of 445! He's gone back to his normal chirpy self bombing about like a grand national shetland😂. Here's hoping he sheds his coat properly this year too!!

    Horses with only one eye!

Just to add with it being uveitis that's a gamble. If it's free or very cheap and you can accept the worse may happen then one eye shouldn't put you off just accept it can take extra time to settle into a new home and be aware of his big blind spot but then some horses are funny for a while in a...

    Horses with only one eye!

My first pony as a child had one eye. Apparently it was severely damaged on barb wire when he was younger. We done everything and many shows and pony clubs. He used to tilt his head while out at times and walk near edges of there was any drops about which was un nerving but he lived a long...

What do your 14.2hh cob types weigh?

Dakota Welsh cob 14.2 is 470kg and spot on body condition score. Sparky is 14hh Fell X Welsh and 462kg and slightly over weight at the moment. Has IR and not as much work over winter due to weather and short days. Go on body conditioning more than actual weight but they get weighed once a month...

That's bizarre she's now negative but great news. Let's hope the first test was wrong. What symptoms was she showing? I remember yoy saying about recent skin problems.

Turns out the liquid paraffin is for storing the cut tablet! Because the air apparently degrades them and hes only on 1/4 a day I need to keep the rest in the pot and fish them out with tweezers! He ate it today in a bit of apple then ate most of his feed but very slow and left a small handful...

    Cushings and rolling

I remember preds being a horrid taste and used to have a nightmare feeding them. I know they are vial as I took them for a short time. I shall experiment. He is the definition of fussy which is odd for a Shetland. No prob yesterday. Maybe the carrot was crunched in just the wrong place. He got...

    Cushings and rolling

Shall let you know tomorrow. Today fir the first time in ages he just walked away from his feed. Can one quart of a tablet do that so quick??? He had his bit of carrot and spat part out. Luckily the tablet was gone. Maybe he tasted it and refused his feed as he's eating hay happily.

    Cushings and rolling

Funnily enough before I read your post I cut a end of a carrot off hollowed it out and plugged the tablet back in! I used to do it when my old horse had a short course of tablets and wouldn't eat them. He ate it no problem. In the bag there was a pot of liquid parafin but no instructions as to...

We'll the new vet called me the other day and was on the phone for 45mins with her! I'm very impressed. It's been decided to start him on 1/4 of a tablet and re test in a month or so and if needed put him on 1/2. Theyll even supply a pill cutter!! She said she understood why he wasn't put on it...

I'm sorry. I'm glad she had a good life and the meds helped her so long. It is a horrid disease and I hope mini does go on leading a normal life for many years. Only time will tell I guess. He does love going out driving and my friends daughter hacking him regularly. Even though she's a teenager...

She's beautiful. I'm so sorry. She does look good even at 25. He's 16 now and Shetlands usually live quite long. I guess it depends if it's a actual tumour causing it as I understand that's not always the case.

    Cushings and rolling

Also in reality as I've read so many different things over the months how long will they live once diagnosed? Bearing in mind a few years ago he was slow to shed his coat, but we put it down to the weather then the year after it was patchy but came out and the vet said if it happened again to...

    Cushings and rolling

Yes I have read that site before very informative. It is always worth the cost if it keeps them happy. When he had laminitis years ago my farrier made him cogs he was experimenting with. Cost me a lot over the time period they needed doing but he was instantly out of pain walking normally and...

Oldie48 I didn't mean to come across like that at all was just giving people a picture how I keep them as lami isn't a worry. Well I still worry about it ha ha but it's low low risk. I have another vet calling me tomorrow for a chat and will go from there. Phonix vets if anyone's used them? My...

    Cushings and rolling

Mine have been kept on a bare paddock system for many years doing rationed hay 4x a day. Greedy feeder nets spread out, plus toys and treat balls with sugar free treats. One of my others has IR and my other two are natives anyway so he's always had company and room to roam picking at hedges or...

I will get a second opinion. The reaonon I have trusted him is the last time I got a second opinion and surgery was suggested by the second vet I lost my poor Darcy 😢. I know this is a different situation and condition just regret not taking his opinion and advice that time. His advice was to...

    Cushings and rolling

Looks like I need a new vet then as mine must be mis informed about the condition as seems everyone thinks he should be on meds straight away. As soon as his pos test came in I asked about the meds and his reasoning for not jumping into it right away was he wasn't showing bad clinical signs the...

    Cushings and rolling

I'm very sorry to hear that. It is so hard to know what to do for the best. It seems to come in random waves. One moment he's bombing about then another ride he's a bit slow and just not his normal self. It's not all the time which is why maybe my vet said leave it. He goes against the grain at...

    Cushings and rolling

Just to be clear he's in a bare paddock most of the year on low sugar rationed hay. I have 4 natives and they all live like this. He was diagnosed in Nov last year and had just started to show these symptoms but the coat not shedding has been going on for two seasons. He had laminitis not long...

    Cushings and rolling

Ha ha they are funny. Horses don't feel the weather as bad as us. My neighbour makes me feel bad saying how it's 9deg and surely they want to be in with a nice thick rug. No!! Open barn hay and bed come in take a dump and bugger off out into rain!
  29. hellfire

    Cushings and rolling

Maybe I need to start clipping earlier then just don't really want to rug him as only gets rugged in extreme weather as he hates rugs, gets too warm in a lightweight and he also gets fat easily as I use the winter to my advantage to keep his weight in check. No my vet advised to put off...

    Cushings and rolling

Mini was diagnosed in Autum as been showing mild symptoms for a while. He's 16 this year and still regularly ridden but it's getting less as he has started to slow down a bit and Ive found he's much more lively and enjoys it more when it's only once a week now. It's a shame as don't want him...
