Just got this message from my local police.

"THEFT OF TACK. Between 25 and 30 items of tack, valued between £15,000 and £20,000, were stolen from a stable in the Balcombe area between 1130pm Saturday 30th and 0730am Sunday 31st October.
Thieves gained entry to a tack room by forcing a padlock and used a wheelbarrow to remove the items to an unknown vehicle. All the saddles were security marked by Sussex Police with a unique registration number between D0307 and D0328. These numbers along with the Sussex Police contact number can be found below the stirrup bar embossed in the leather.
If you have any information about this incident or are offered one of these saddles without proof of ownership, then phone Sussex Police on 0845 6070999 and quote serial 589 31/10/10. We would be very grateful as we suspect these saddles have been taken far from our area."

I have 2 sets of tack at the yard and yes it would be a bloody hassle to cart them back and forward, not to mention potential for scuffing and damage living in the boot rather than on a proper rack. It would also mean that it's left in the car all day when i'm at work as i go to the yard straight from work. I don't want my car to be a mobile tack room.

I pay for facilities at the yard including a secure tack room and I am satisfied at the precautions taken there and I am insured should some git decide to break in by force.

Just because you do something differently doesn't mean others are crazy for using a tackroom.

Get all your tack marked with your postcode so that it can easily be identified if it is found. You would be suprised how much tack is recovered but it is impossible to identify the owner because it is not marked.
