My friend had a shogun sports then swapped it for the cheaper Discovery (older) she said she loves towing with the Discovery and finds it much easier to reverse.
I really rate Nissan Terranos - I've had three now, two short wheel bases and currently have a long wheel base. They tow brilliantly and are easy to drive/park etc.
I went for the Disco as it's got a 3.5t towing limit, so whilst you may never tow that much, you know it's capable of it, so should tow a lesser load with ease. It's also got constant 4wd to help get you out of any sticky situations, e.g slippy roads.
Have just bought my second Shogun 3.2 Elegance. OK, it was a tad more than £4K being brand new, but the Shoguns are fab, fab, fab. Everyone I know who has one rates them. They are tough, beefy and get me and my trailer out of most scrapes. Have seen reasonable ones advertised for around about £4K, so good luck.
I've got a 2000 model (they stopped making them in 2002) which also means that they fall into the cheaper tax bracket. I'm on 2nd one now purely on their reputation.
I'm going to throw a spanner in the works now though.....As much as I love my Fourtrak, when it comes to swapping it I plan to buy an estate car (obviously with the appropriate pulling power) This is because all the show centres that I tow to have concrete car parks and it's been years since I went to a show that was held on grass. Any four wheel drive going to be more costly than a car (although in 4wd terms the fourtrak is extremely ecconomical and it's cheaper tax)
Used to have a Nissan Terrano cost me thousands to keep it on the road, eventually got a Discovery fantastic, brought it from James French Oxford way had a few problems but all fixed under the warranty absolutely everything covered under the warranty, love it so much tows brilliantly, not sure where you live but have a look on the website www.james-french.co.uk
Anything with a toyota badge (if you can find one for £4k as they tend to keep their value and as they are so reliable and last people tend to keep hold of them)
I have a landrover discover and love it it is a 2000 and is just fantastic at pulling. I now have a lorry but could not part with my disco as love it so much. It is also fantastic in the muddy park.
