Has anyone been to do the 1* at Bonn Rodderberg?

What is the event like?

Am aiming to qualify and compete in a 1* next year (fingers crossed) and am toying with the idea of going abroad and this looks like a very nice course.

Also any good 1*'s in the UK that people can reccomend, also like the look of Weston.

And apart from costs whats the pro's and cons of a CIC against a CCI? Id be quite keen to go and do it over 3 days I think, although I know this is more expensive.

l thought Hartpury was fantastic.Very well run,you really felt like you were at a 3 day.Weston is lovely but you do run the risk of it peeing with rain for the whole week and then its sh#t!! CIC's are loads of fun as well but unfortunately hardly any in england. And yes English CCI's are very expensive about the £400 mark

Don't quote me on this.. but i'm pretty sure that a CIC* doesn't hold any qualification value!! ie it won't qualify you for a CCI* etc.
Where as a CCI* will help in qualifying you for a CCI**

Hence there arn't many CIC*s around, as they are fairly pointless.. although fun

i did Bonn 3* years ago, and it was a lovely course but the going was VERY hard and they didn't do anything about it. also, it's in a huge volcanic crater so on a hot day (it was 35 degrees when i did it) with no breeze at all because it's all in the dip, it is a serious stamina test for a horse. lots of helpers/grooms were keeling over with heatstroke. it takes about 10 hours to drive there, btw.
tbh for a 1 star i'd stay here, there's a lot of very nice ones! Weston's lovely, always a proper Janet track. make sure your horse is good at skinnies though, cos she does love them!

We went out to Ede for the 2* last year but they had a 1* as well which was a very friendly track providing your horse doesn't mind water. Good going, nice courses and cheap entry, stabling and food all covered by £200

a cic* will count towards your qualification for a CCI* why do you think they ran one at gatcombe this year? To make sure all british Le lion six year olds were qualified unlike last season!!!!
Hartpury fantastic by the way and blair is lovely if they are running one so was the new norfolk one houghton hall but might come too soon however as cost next to nothing to enter abroad, you have to consider it. work out your costs carefully esp diesel as its not much cheaper here right now. if you can find someone to share with you are laughing usually.

CIC* isnt required for CCI* though, a normal novice run is far cheaper!! Thats a Le Lion created rule. Very bizarre.

i think you will find that it is one f those either or rules its either an intermidiate with qualifying score or a cic* however as le lion is a championship (????) the national federation are entitled to tighten the qualifications if they like and at le lion they do. Just as the british selectors used to insist on an advanced run clear for any seven year old who wished to be considered. if you read the teeny weeny insy bitsy writting at the end of the rules you will find that the qualifications required in the book are the minimum. any National federation cn ask for more. over here badminton doesnt actually ask for more qualifyinhg runs they just ballot thosewho havet got a certain amount of three star points which is the same if you think about it!!

Boss I agree with you CIC* does seem pointless unless you are aiming for Le Lion. I did pull up the rules and spotted something else though a CIC* would qualify you for a CIC** but I'm sure most people would ensure that they had done an Intermediate anyway.

yep SteveGG, i thought the only thing a CIC* qualified you for was a CIC**, which is a bit stupid, as if you'd only done a CIC*, there's no way you'd be ready for a CIC**

As Boss said, i think CIC*s are pretty pointless unless you want to qualify your 6yr old for Le Lion

Martinvast cant be rated highly enough (although its a bit scary that they are still fence building up to the last minute!!) Its easy to get to (only 1/2 hr max once you get off the ferry in Cherbourg) very friendly, good layout. It was MS's first foray into competing abroad and she thoroughly enjoyed it.
I didnt go with her to Bonn, but again she enjoyed it although a few pulled their horses out due to the hard going (could be why the German chap did so well at Badders this year - used to hard ground!!). I think they are not as careful as we have become over the going.
Both events we shared transport so the cost wasnt that great - in fact I think it was cheaper than us going all the way up to Blair with just the 1 horse!

very true!!

went out last year and the ground was quite like rock but songs legs are good so i ran!! was a loveely bold course for the * which was quite alot different to the * pics on eventriders as that was the CIC*

After the controversy over the ground it has been stripped of it CIC***W and most other classes althought it wasnt helped by being used as the AUS home base and being used in thewet weather 3 weeks before we got there and the ground was very rutted!

Oh and the other fact was that it took us 13 hours to get there so you would need 2 drivers although we did only have one!

all in all i wouldnt say it would be the ideal event to go to if your looking for a * run abroad!!
