Penny will be 1 on the first of April. The day I will measure her, and then add on 2 hands - I think someone on here told me thats reasonably accurate way to get a mature horse height? When I got her she was 10.1hh and a bit, back in late September. I've held off officially measuring her since, waiting til her first birthday. I know she has grown, filled out and got longer. Her bum is now quite high, at a guess about 12.2 ish, possibly more. I am hoping she will be 11.2hh on the 1.4. so then chances are she may reach her estimated adult height of 13.2hh! Fingers crossed eh?!
She is a total poppet, and although a long term project to bring on and sell, I can't see she is going anywhere!! So much for plans. Oh well, the collection starts here..... lol

My friend is screwed!!!! Her ten month old is 15.1hh now lol if the add 2 hands works then he`s going to be a big boy!

Penny is a New Forest. She is dark grey / roan coloured and I am sure she will eventually go white after being born chestnut. Not what I had planned, but when I saw her birth date I couldn't say no as Meg also shares the same birthday!! They are 'Fools' together, as in Fools Edition and Fools Gold!

At 15.1hh and only 10 months - wow, he will be a big chap!

I rekon 'the adding on 2 hands on a yearling' works pretty well. Mine was about 14.1 - 14.2 as a yearling. She's rising four now and about 16.1 and a bit.

I also did the 'string test': measuring from her mid-knee to coronet band and that gave 16.3. Hopefully she wont make that as I'm only 5'1" and too old and fat to leap onto something that big :D

Rising 4 and 16.1hh and a bit and your gonna end up with 16.2hh, so not far off 16.3hh :D

Ours were 14,1hh and a bit and 14.3hh at just over a year, string test says 16.1hh and 17hands. I reckon they will both be there or there abouts. Their growth slowed down a lot over the winter, but they are on the rise again. Bit gutting for me, as the smaller one was supposed to make 14.2hh and I have a serious allergy to big horses!

On the premise the my youngster was going to be big I bought a foal to make 15hands give or take. At 7 months old he was a good 13 hands, and now at 9 months old is pushing 14hands. I strongly suspect he will be a tad bigger than 15hands, but I refuse to measure him properly or do a string test, as this one is going to be my horse of a lifetime, therefore he will be 15hands even if he measures 17hands! :D

I also bought a little spotty pony cob from the sales, he was 12.1hh ish at 2 and a half and I thought he'd make a cracking pony for my niece in a few years time, so I gifted him to her as hes an out and out kids pony. Little sod then grew and grew! Hes now a good 13.2hh+ at rising 3, and therefore will be more than big enough for me to ride! None of them are gelded yet, and being entire is supposed to inhibit growth upwards, so god help me at the end of the month when their boys bits get lobbed off!!

I'm cursed with babies that grow like weeds on nothing more than good grass and a handful of suregrow everyday!

Send your filly to me, I'll send her back at 4yrs old standing 16hands :D

Thanks but no need. I'm liable to squash her quite well enough myself - unless I get cracking on my diet to loose 3 stone!!!

And do you REALLY think she's likely to grow more :(

I had always heard the hand for every year thing too, but when I got my youngster he was 15months old and only standing at 12.1hh. I'd been told he was to make 15hh but I was thinking he wasn't going to scrape 14. Now only 6months later he's about 13.3 ... Maybe he'll slow up for a while now who knows!!!

Lovely! I have a newforest filly too although she is a year older than yours and I'm still trying to work out what height she will reach! I think she's about 12.3hh now. Surely she will make 13.2hh? I hope so!

I've never heard of the adding 2 hands at year one before! My boy was standing around 15.2 when I bought him as a 2 year old last year. He's just about to turn 3 and is already over 16h! He's an RID so will continue to grow and mature until he's 7. How much he will go up in height I don't know. A friend bought a 6 year old ID and he grew another hand before he matured!

I was told when I bought my boy he would make 16h and not much over! Lol well considering he's not even 3 and he's already over 16h, that was duff information!
