12yo slowing down

My poor little old staff has been notibly slower this past week or so. Might give her some mild pain relief to see if she's feeling her age and maybe change of diet or something but I fear it's that sort of time. She's not exactly a bright dog anyway never has been but even dad has noticed her a bit more depressed lately.

She was my first pup so the thought of her passing on breaks my heart in to a million pieces. But I won't have her in pain. She doesn't even really look her age physically but mentally she must feel it and she has a bad hip too.

I'm hoping a few tweaks perks her up a bit and if not I'll Chat with the vet to see if they can offer any advice.
 
i feel your pain. this was what happened with my lurcher last year, she was almost 13 and gradually slowed down and as she had a heart murmer i thought the heart may be the problem so took her to the vet expecting to get some heart pills and she would be back to normal. it was arthritis in her hips and she was put onto pain killers but they made no difference so i made the final decision ..this was in september and i still get upset thinking about her. i dont regret my decision as quality of life is the most important thing but i miss her every day...
 
Sadly, sometimes it is a sign of that something not fixable is going on in their bodies, but sometimes it can e.g. be caused by a tick disease, toothache, or something else which often can be cured/helped.

If her age is affecting her joints, either the bad hip or somewhere else, I've had both dogs, and 1 cat, who got lots of help from acupuncture. Before acupuncture they needed painkillers, but after acupuncture they didn't.

I've sometimes worried about that one of my pet's time has come, and sometimes I've been correct, but I've been wrong much more often than what I've been correct, so talking to your veterinarian sounds like a good idea.
 
I have a 12 yo and a 14 yo this morning the 12 yo did get up when I did it was like dagger in my heart I will take her to the vet s next week .
 
Been there quite recently - it is horrible, if only they could talk! I hope some pain relief makes a difference, I agree speaking to your vet is a good idea and I really hope it helps
 
She seems a lot perkier after a dose of loxicom. Will continue it on lower doses and see how much she needs - it says it can be given long term on the bottle if you can get it to a small maintenance dose. At her age I wouldn't be worrying about long term health effects!
 
Good news. My mum's collie has loxicom long term, she is on a very small dose but every now and then if she overdoes it mum ups it for a few days.
 
The heat could also be a factor - our old boy seems to be sleeping a lot more at the moment. (The old boy I was asking about joint supplements for)
 
I rather rate yumove for arthritic conditions. My girl was on tramadol bid for a lon time and when I started the yumove, I was able to reduce the tramadol and still have a comfortable dog
 
My 10 yrs bullmastiff is on Yumove and it has helped but she certainly isn't bouncing around like a puppy like some report.

I know I am going to have that awful situation where her mind is alert and active but her body gives up .
 
Our old boy seems quite a bit better now the hot weather's broken. Does anyone else's old dog seem livelier? He went further and faster on his walk this morning (we don't do a long one but he hasn't managed much more than sniffing a blade of grass lately).
 
My dog is on Yumove and I've just started on Boswellia which seems to be working. She also has Onsior from the vet which I can give her if she needs it. They did say they were surprised she doesn't need them all the time. There's lots that can be done for arthritis.

We really notice it with our older lab, she is so much happier when it is cool.
 
My old collie (14/15 year old) is on a daily dose of Metacam and also Green Lipped Mussel powder and it definitely seems to help.
