Ok, this is pretty much as is written in the subject.
I am looking at a 14.2hh, 5 year old, middleweight cob. Is there a chance he will grow slightly more or would this be his final height?
I'm pretty sure some horses carry on growing until quite late...but I may just have totally made that up!
Any ideas are welcome.
Thanks.

nope, they can still grow some more, depending on each individual horse. for example, i also have a 5 year old. shes 17hh and still has a bit of filling out to do. i think she will get to 17.1hh and HOPEFULLY stop!

Does he look mature? If so, there's less chance he'll grow. If he's not been well done or is croup high, those are indications he is more likely to grow. Can't say 100% either way - sorry, not very helpful, but I don't think it's clearcut.

I bought Genie last year as a 14.2hh 5 year old Welsh Cob. She is now 6 and about 15hh. I would say chances of him continuing to inch up are fairly high.

I find these post so interesting really. I am not sure if I am the only person whos horses never grew an inch from 4 years of age or whether people do not know how to measure a horse correctly. Some Horses do grow till they are 7-8, some mature faster than others, BUT majority of horses are fully grown (heightwise) by the time they are 4. They obviously have to still fill out and mature in other ways but they do not grow that much taller.

I’m sorry but I just don’ agree with that. Horses grow as they muscle up, and at 4 I have never known a horse to be as muscled as it would be at 6 (obviously according to work load and correct work). Bodey was measured for his passport at 3 years old at 14’2hh, and then again at 6 years old at 15’1hh.

Its hard to say, he would have done most of his growing i would have thought, i would not bank on him growing any more, but there is a chance he could grow a little more. Do you know the dam and sire height?

Interesting to hear about all your ponies.

BSJAlove - 17.1hh? OUCH! Good luck for when you fall off of that!

tryingmum - I personally don't think he looks very mature. But then again I'm used to big horses, so all ponies look quite foaly to me.

Puss_In_Boots - I have no idea of the dam or sire whatsoever.

To everyone else - I hope he's like your horses and grows an inch or two. Then hopefully when he fills out and muscles up etc. I will look the perfect size for him!

I always thought it was heavier and the taller horses/ponies that took longer to mature.
At 5 I would say there is a big chance he could grow up (and out)
Just be careful, I bought a 15hh M/W cob when she was 6/7 and now at 9/10 she's a H/W
