14.2hh too small?

I'm 5'4 and 8st 4lbs.. i ride a 14.2hh comfortably and recently went to look at a 14.3hh on loan. I would say it's fine, but then i'm nearly 27 so have no more growing to do!

It's not so much it's height, more how much leg is taken up. We have a 14.1 connie x who is fine for my 5ft 3 daughter, but her friend of the same height has had to move on from her welsh x of the same height as he was too narrow and didn't take up her leg.

I'm 5ft 5 and have a 15.2 sec.d and a 14.2 cob x. I look fine on both although prefer to ride the 15.2. As above it depends on the person's legs and how comfortable the rider feels. It may also depend on breed as my sec.d takes up more leg than if i were to ride a tb of the same height for example.

Depends on its build but from your size/weight not at all

I looked for a chunky built section D cob. We think he is very Connemara but he had lots of bone and I am 5 6 ...12 stone! Due to his broadness my legs sit just fine. I have sat on 15hh + but due to their fineness slimmer shoulders I felt like I was too big/tall my legs were further down).

I think 15hh 15.2 is such a nice height..middle of them all!

i'm 5'7 and 9.5 st n i have just taken on a 13.2 med weight cob for me and my son to share.

as long as horse carries rider comfortabley and rider doesn't feel awkward size should be a minor factor to consider.

i wouldn't chose a 15.1 over a 14.2 if the 14.2 was more suitable for the job (temp, experience etc)

Eeek, a bit embarassed to admit that I am 5ft8 and own a 14.2 welsh d mare.
She is quite chunky and I have very short legs in relation to my height so I dont look like i'm overly squishing her lol. Anyway she isn't a novice ride so you couldn't have a little kid/teen on her (so i tell myself to make me feel better lol!)

Is this teenager (yourself?) likely to grow much?

14.2hh or 15hh sounds like a good size to me. And as other posters have mentioned, much depends on leg-take-uppage.

I would say that height and weight is fine! your daughter must be so slim!
I'm 5'3 weigh 9 stone and have a 14.2 welsh D......no problems! I also ride a 13.2 who I wouldn't say I looked big on.

Actually this is a pic of me 5'3 when I weighed about 8 stone on a 14.2...I think I look about right (maybe even a bit small on him

Eeek! I'm 5'9 and mine is 13.3 D: I believe as long as the pony is happy taking the weight and the rider is ok, then it's fine! My legs are a little long on him, but I jump, dressage and all sorts on him and I don't notice. :D

I'm 6'2" and ride my mother's 14'2 Dales pony. I do look a tad daft as I have ridiculously long legs, but if I ride her in Spring then her extra tubbiness helps a lot ;)

I'm another for riding the little ones - i'm 5"4 and share a 13.3 welsh b, so really as long as the rider/pony feel comfortable it doesn't matter too much :)

My daughter is 15 and 5ft 2 and she has an Irish cob who is 14.2 and she looks perfect on her! However we are going to have problems when she is 17 and she won't be able to compete in the pony classes! She could really have done with a 15hh with regards to competing but my 15hh mare is too big for her! Just consider the height/ age rules!

Totally depends on the type/breed of pony too, our 14.2hh is a bloody beast so makes most riders look like a pea ontop. Then you do get the finner types so won't take up as much leg.
Heres our 14.2hh with me

I am 5ft 7, 12 stone and have a 13.2hh welsh C. He is a chunky boy and takes the leg up. i do feel a bit top heavy on him due to the fact that he is very good at tucking his chin into his chest andmaking me feel like theres nothing in front! I would prefer him to be 14hh ideally but he was free so can;t moan!

almost deffinatley that would be fine, im 5'8, 8st and ride a 14.3 and i did ride a 13.2 for a while so the pony can take it easily (obvs dependant on the pony) its all about how the rider feels, if you feel too big, you probably are.

As others have said it realy does depend on type and how much of your leg they take up. But you will prob be fine on a 14.2hh.
I'm 5ft2 and weigh between 8 and 9 stone.
This is me on my old mare who was 13.2hh we did endurance rides of upto and inclu 80km right uptill I lost her age 23ish :( and she coped fine :)

This is me on Herbie a 12.2hh forest bred forester.

Although I look alittle big for him in this pic he copes with me fine. Infact this picture was taken when he was still awful to ride and used to buck, rear, leap and spin with me all the time.

And this is Merryn me 14.1hh forest bred forester.

As you can see they are all prity chunky so take up my leg well.

I'd say yes. I'm 5.2ft but I've quite long legs for my height. My 14.2hh connie takes me comfortably and I wouldn't particularly want any bigger. Even my sisters 13hh fell (chunky beast) can take me ok. My legs look slightly long but it doesn't impede her movement at all.

What you may want to consider, however, is age/competition classes etc. If your teenager is nearing 17 and competative then it may be better to go for the horse. Whilst adults can compete ponies (both myself and my sister do) the classes are somewhat restricted. A horse may be a better option in the long term.
