Hi,

I have a beautiful chunky (9 inches bone) Connemara mare, who id like to put in foal next year (when 4).

I’d like to produce a small hunter type. I need to add a bit of TB or WB I think as although she’s performance bred she’s extremely laid back and only uses enough energy absolutely necessary to eat and sleep.

I like Classic Opera (15h) and Tiger attack - but I think TA may be too big??

Any suggestions?

It is a lottery, I wanted a cob when I bred a vanner 15h mare to a 16.2 RID. I got a small hunter who is barely 157cm and looks small against others in class.

Bred the same vanner mare to a 16.2 NH blood horse and got a whopping 17.2 middleweight hunter.

Tiger Attack is very smart and gets plenty of show horses.

Yes always a gamble I suppose

I was reading the first foal is usually always a bit smaller don’t know if true or not

First foal is often smaller but it’s also dictated to a reasonable extent by the mare. Plus genetic variability/lottery.
I dont think going to a 16/16.1hh is necessarily bad, but also CO is generally throwing bigger than himself.

I think either of those you list is worth considering. I’d suggest you look at a lot of offspring from both and go with those you prefer the stamp of.

I haven’t seen many TAs. The COs really do get stamped nicely consistently

Thank you!

Interesting to know CO is throwing bigger foals, really do like him.

I also considered Classic Opera and phoned the stud. i was told that, although he himself was small, he had much bigger horses in his back lines so no guarantee you would get a smaller foal like him.
