Hi, I have a beautiful dark bay gelding who is 22yo, semi-retired and has cushings. He lives out happily all year round and is checked on / fed daily by the people who rent the yard while I am at work (I go at weekends).

The family have more than enough horses to look after already and it's becoming a strain for them to look after mine as well.

I am unable to afford full livery and have to work mon - fri.

Can anyone please suggest what people do in these situations, and if there are any other forums I could sign up to, to find a solution?

Someone who is looking for a companion horse would be ideal. He has a great nature and can be hacked out. I am also happy to pay upto £200 p/m to help.

It might help if you said what area you are in, and also a few more details - is he on medication for Cushings, is he shod, etc?

Can you not find a good grass livery for that money? only other thing I would say is how do you manage the Cushings - if your boy is on Prascend that will really put his cost up and also think you need to be clear if the cushings has led to any signs of laminitis.

Anpther option could be to post to see if anyone can recommend a nice retirement livery as well..
 
My retirees are on grass retirement livery in Suffolk - £200pm would easily cover the cost but I don't know if they would do daily meds...

Sorry guys - based in Surrey. Would happily re-locate him around 1 hr drive so I can still visit.

Meds are tablet every other day and he has not shown any signs of laminitis and is in a field with lots of grass.

I will pay £200 p/m plus all shoes, meds, food etc.

I just want somewhere he can spend his last few years happy with someone who is happy to care for him.
 
Wish I could help - I have 3 horses at home and one has Cushings, but doesn't cause too many laminitis type problems so far, sounds a lot like your boy. If I was nearer it would be great :(

Hope you find somewhere lovely for him, he sounds like a sweetie :)

Ah I see. Those hours of opening are very restrictive aren't they. 6pm close doesn't let you enjoy the summer evenings at all. I'm surprised they have people happy with this.
 
Hi Emma, I've recently spent lots of time researching yards in Kent. In my search I found a place called Hazeldene Farm which is near Swanley. It's a retirement livery according to the ad, has knowledge of looking after horses with cushings.

I don't know what it's like (as I wasn't looking for a retirement place) or how much it costs, but it sounds ideal - if you don't mind it being in Kent not Surrey!
