OK, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there a huge amout of 16.1hh's out there? It seems to be the magic height for some reason, nobody wants a 16hh or a 16.2hh.
Not everyone wants horses that capable though and for me I have one a 16'2 and one at 17.0 and have always said when these go to the stables in the sky my next size will be 16.1

Who has actually had their horse measure (by a qualified measuring person!) anyway?!
Everyone just guesses at 16.1hh cos it looks a bit bigger than a 16hh but not as big as a 17hh. It's total non sense! 16.1 just sounds good, any bigger and they sound too big for most people and any smaller and it sounds like a small horse.

It is seen as quite small for a competition horse though - most elite show jumpers are bigger than 16.1 and the top dressage horses are ginormous.

You're right there. Over he's its crazy as the Dutch people are all giants (my OH is 6' 4" and does not look that tall) so they want big horses. My girl is 167cm (not sure what that converts to) and most competition riders wouldn't look at her because she's too small!

167cm is just short of 16.2
my int grade A is 16 hh only when she stands on her toes and stretches a lot
normally measures 15.3hh - didn't stop her jumping.
My boy was described as 16.1 when I had him. He's 17.3hh now
(and I do have a measuring stick!)
It's more important when you are looking to do show classes or pony classes, but as long as it's the right horse/height for you it's not a problem imho.
I'm on the look out for another 'is 16.1 will make 17.2'!
She probably isn't and to honest I couldn't give a cr@p what size my horse is as long as I can ride it (don't feel too big/too small). He passport says 167cm though so she'll just have to be that height
Yep, lots of top eventers at that height or smaller - and the odd show jumper is 16.1hh or smaller, but they are always noted for being small if they are. Arko for example (16.1)
Are there any small top dressage horses out there - anyone know?
(by "small dressage horse" i mean anything under 17hh!)
I like smaller horses, and brought a 16hh 3/4yr old Irish horse hoping he'd make about 16.1hh...now heading towards 16.3hh
I always said i wouldnt want anything bigger than 16.2hh, but hey, the height doesnt cause a problem!! I think the build of the horse can make a huge difference though, a stocky 16hh can seem alot more horse than a slimline 17.2hh IMHO.
Mine are 16.2hh and 16.3hh....and I wouldn't want anything smaller tbh. 1.50m looks big enough from the bigger one...I wouldn' want to turn to it on a pony lol! I did used to compete a 15.3hh at that level though...but I was a kid at the time so had no concept of fear lol!
We do have a very good GP dressage horse on our yard who can't be much more than 16hh though
i agree i have 3v horses that if anyone asked what height i would have said 16.1
measured them at the weekend tom is 16hh, miles is 16.1 and sox is 16.3
Mines 16.1, was bought as a 15.3 5 yr old as the perfect size for me, but he grew! He's a dressage horse and rides bigger, but my trainer who rides a 17.3 thinks he's a pony LOL.
My mare was sold to me as 16hh but my friend used a very accurate measuring stick to check as she was doing some uni project and turns out she's exactly 16.1hh! Some people are surprised she wasnt bigger. Shes probably one of the biggest on the yard. Shes an ISH so a bit chunky which is misleading too.
well brought H as a 4yo at 16.1 now he's 16.3 but to be honest i can;t really tell the difference, i guess it just happened so gradually that i didnlt notice. more that hes now a mature rising 7yo and has rather alot more power than before!
