I've recently bought an ifor williams HB505 trailer, i'm also just about to look for a new horse.
I just wondered if a 16.3 would fit inside comfortably?
I know they say they can fit 2 x 16.2 but i would only ever be taking one horse around..
Other option is to take the middle partition out..
Has any one had any experience of this situation?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I have on a number of occassions travelled a 16.3hh in a 505 - however with the middle partition out and a full breast bar. Plenty of room that way.

Only thing to be aware of is that the 505 has slightly less headroom so if you have a bad traveller you might need to reconsider

friend travels a 17.1 without partition but he does have to duck to fit in. and I wouldn't regularly.

You might get away with a 16.3, depend how high its head is and if it travels well.

Very easy to put a horse off travelling in a trailer from lack of headroom/width. Not sure if the 510 actually has any more headroom but is quite a bit wider - it was the only trailer that my old hunter (only 16.2 but v chunky!) would travel in.

If you must do it use a poll guard.

I had a 505 when I bought my chunky 16.2 - lasted 3 months before getting a 510 (and a nice debt!) He would go into it no problem but was so cramped and looked so uncomfortable even with the partition out. He used to stumble around left hand corners as well but he's fine in the new one. If you want a horse to fit the trailer I'd recommend a 16hh max. The 510 has a lot more headroom for a larger horse as well as being longer and wider.

i have a 505 iw and i regularly travel my 16h3 mare in it with the partition in it. in fact she travels much better with the partion than she deos with out it so i wouldn't see it being a problem i have also had another horse in the trailer with her and still no problems

I agree with iron horse, the guidelines say for up to 16.2hh for 505, I refused to travel my big horse until we had access to a 510, I didnt want to put her off cramping her ina trailer that isnt designed for her height.

I've seen people do it but think its the easiest way to create a fear of travelling/loading if there isnt enough headroom etc.

I have a 16.3hh and a 16.2hh and I wouldn't really want to travel either of them in a 505. We have a 510 and we can put both in with no problems but I'm not sure I'd want to risk a 505.

Agree with most posts re different builds, some horses fit others don't. However just a thought. If you were travelling a 16'3 in 505 & had an accident would the fact that the IW 505 is marketed for up to 16'2 have any impact on an insurance claim?
