180g and 200g rugs - any real difference?

I'm trying to decide between two rugs for my lad:

A Shires 180g combo and a Maxima 200g combo. He's unclipped at the moment so still in a lightweight but he's due to have a chaser clip this week.

He has two 300g combo rugs for the winter, but think I need a medium to tide him over.

Therefore, my question is is there really much difference between a 180g and a 200g? And I don't mean 'yes, the difference is 20g duh', but just in terms of warmth?

Are they going to offer pretty much the same warmth, or is 20g actually quite a lot of difference?

It's all a bit baffling :/

No, I doubt it would make any difference. I would go for the one that has the tougher outer. I prefer 1200 denier or more for turnout rugs. Obviously, the outer makes a difference to how warm the rug is, as does the design. ie. does it cover the belly etc. Personally, I don't see the point in combo rugs unless there's a blizzard going on, especially when you are not clipping the whole neck off.

........ or like mine your horse has over a foot of mane which comes in resembling dreadlocks if they have no combo on :D All my turnouts bar the no fills have necks.

I don't think 20g will make any noticable difference, more important would be the fit or the denier of the outer. I had the 180g Shires Combo - a nice rug but a bit restricted on the neck for my chunky NF. I have found though that the stitching didn't last very well, initially on just the badge but then on the neck fastenings. I have recently thrown out as one of the front chest fastenings came off and ripped the rug but not sure if the pony had got caught on something and pulled away. Not bad for the money but the stitching thread not very hardwearing, so bear that in mind. I have no experience of the other rug but back to your original question, I wouldn't base my choice purely on one weight or the other as the difference is so slight.

Thank you! The maxima one is 20 quid more, but is 1200d as opposed to 600d on the Shires. He's not a 'rug destroyer' and never rips any, but perhaps the added denier will add warmth.

I thought it would be a very small difference, it's just confusing when you see 180g advertised as both lightweight and medium!

Thanks; the Maxima one is 1200d so probably the better option :)

I'd prefer to go for combo as he's not a naturally warm horse and his field is quite exposed. Also for keeping clean reasons!

I know what you mean about the weights as it's all relative to your own horses' requirements. For mine anything above 250g would be heavy, over 100g medium and below that light, although it's difficult to get a good quality lighweight rug with a decent denier outer and some filling. I like the high neck Wug style of Horseware Rhino but they either have no fill or the next weight is 220g, which is too heavy. An outer of 1000D or 1200D would be my choice for a turnout.
