Hi there,

We opened a new Tack Shop & Saddlery in March which is going well, but it's our first Christmas and I am doing my final ordering for our Christmas products but I wanted to know from the "horses mouth" as such (sorry!) if you guys could give me any pointers to the sort of stuff you would purchase!? I hope you all don't mind! Apart from the main obvious ones, what would you buy the sorts of things for stocking fillers?

So would gift baskets be a good idea?
Soft Toys - stocking fillers
Notebooks, mugs etc
Would you buy competition jackets and breeches for Christmas pressies? Would it be a good idea to get some extra in?

Any ideas are greatly received?

Thanks!!

Olivier

Something our lovely local tack shop do is a wish list. I think you go in store to complete it with all the bits and bobs you would like including colour and size. Then when parents / other half want inspiration they can go and pick something from the list and it'll be the right make, colour etc - and still be a surprise on the day.
Not much help with stock but I thought it is a pretty neat idea!

I like little things like themed christmas horse treats that you can get for other people on your yard - something small (because there'll be a lot of them!) but useful :)

I'd be wary of stockings with sell by dates on them. If you don't sell the for Xmas you will be stuck with them, and not be able to sell them for the rest of the year!

I love receiving luxury versions of stuff - what could be nicer than having a couple of natural bristle brushes with leather backs or a leather headcollar that can be used and enjoyed everyday.

I think the ponies' favourite present was a 'pony selection box' made up by a friend, a tiny hamper stuffed with small/sample sizes of various horse treats. (one suitable for 'fatties' would be great)

Most of us are big kids at heart and are suckers for pretty little soft toys and the like (i have a very cute toy pony who sits on the dashboard of the van - he was a christmas present))

That's a brilliant idea! It's a really good way to encourage people to get horsey presents, plus I can imagine it makes life a lot easier for friends/ family!

i brought a friend a lovely fluffy head collar last year and this year i am buying her a new fleece.

i also will be buying yard friends small items like gloves, brushes, treats in the snow man pot and cards with horse themes

i am how ever very taken with a browband in our local tack shop.. i may just have to buy it Levi as a present :D

Ours does one evening a week late night Christmas opening until 8pm. It means that you won’t get quite such hectic December weekend shopping, and I actually really enjoyed the experience of going in the dark, with all of their Christmas lights on.

My OH goes into our local tack/feed store looking for small stocking filler type presents for me as he wouldn't dare buy me breeches etc as I'm so fussy. Accessories such as hats, scarves, gloves, socks or small things like whips, stocks, mugs etc are good presents. I wish my local tack store had a display of suggested christmas gifts, it might avoid me getting a salt brick as a present again this year!

Leadropes (maybe with glittery bits in?), hoofpicks, warm brightly coloured socks, warm gloves, horsey mugs (how I'd love one with my breed of choice on) etc... always go down well with me at Xmas.

I also like to dress my horses up a bit at Xmas with tinsel, but I have seen some nice ready made rein wraps, horse antlers, exercise sheets and leg wraps in christmas colours which look fun.

I have also seen some nice colour themed gift sets. Not too expensive but they had a tubtrug style feed bowl, a magic brush, a leadrope, a hoofpick, and a bag of horse treats plus a couple of other grooming bits that were nicely wrapped in cellophane with a big bow.

In the run up to Christmas, one of our main shops does special late nights, where they invite local riding clubs to after hours openings, do a couple of free prize draws, have special offers on, have tea/coffee and cakes and usually offer a discount (eg £5 off for every £50 you spend). Good way to get people through the doors to spend a bit of cash and nice way to get to know the local clubs.

This, or matchy matchy numnah, fly fringe and bandages presented nicely?

I think matchy match draws a lot of people in!

I always buy little presents for my liveries and their horses, so things like healthy horse treats (so many are full of mollasses, grrrr!), decent hand cream, horsey mugs/flasks, horse shaped soaps, anything fun and glittery (horse chalk, hoof paint!), gloves, socks etc

The wishlist idea is great (I have lots of horsey things on my amazon wishlist)! I'm looking for a new pair of boots, so I'm trying on a few to see what fits and giving my husband details of size etc so that he can buy them :p
