I thought I would do a little report on my first lesson with my TB.
I have had Finn about 2 months now, and due to one thing and another (getting back comfortable, saddle fitted etc) he didn't get ridden for the first month. We did a lot of in hand work in that time which I think has been invaluable and he really feels like hes starting to trust me
We have just moved the horses home and haven't sorted somewhere to school yet so the first few weeks were mainly hacking. Lots of high vis:
So our lesson on Saturday was full of firsts - first time ridden away from home, first proper lesson, first time cantering in a school and he was fab! This will only be the third time he has been asked to work in circles and I am very impressed by how much he seems to have picked up hacking in straight lines.
He came off the lorry with eyes on stalks but settled pretty quickly and was very calm and settled in the school. I was very impressed with how much he was listening to me straight from the start, and it's so nice to ride something that wants to work for you
We started off working on getting him to take the contact forward as he is very light in the mouth and doesnt really want to take it down. He got the hang of this quite quickly:
Once he was taking the contact down a bit more we worked on putting a bit of power into the trot.
Need to work on getting him not to come behind the vertical and just build up some muscle! Instructor thinks he will be fab once hes got some muscle and he gives me an amazing feeling so very excited. We even had a canter at the end which he took in his stride as well.
So I am very pleased with him. Plan his to take him somewhere at the weekend to have a play over some poles and then find an Intro somewhere to go and have a go at. And we have found a school to hire now so can crack on with some more work in the school
