I thought I would do a little report on my first lesson with my TB.

I have had Finn about 2 months now, and due to one thing and another (getting back comfortable, saddle fitted etc) he didn't get ridden for the first month. We did a lot of in hand work in that time which I think has been invaluable and he really feels like hes starting to trust me :) We have just moved the horses home and haven't sorted somewhere to school yet so the first few weeks were mainly hacking. Lots of high vis: :)

So our lesson on Saturday was full of firsts - first time ridden away from home, first proper lesson, first time cantering in a school and he was fab! This will only be the third time he has been asked to work in circles and I am very impressed by how much he seems to have picked up hacking in straight lines.
He came off the lorry with eyes on stalks but settled pretty quickly and was very calm and settled in the school. I was very impressed with how much he was listening to me straight from the start, and it's so nice to ride something that wants to work for you :)
We started off working on getting him to take the contact forward as he is very light in the mouth and doesnt really want to take it down. He got the hang of this quite quickly:

Once he was taking the contact down a bit more we worked on putting a bit of power into the trot.

Need to work on getting him not to come behind the vertical and just build up some muscle! Instructor thinks he will be fab once hes got some muscle and he gives me an amazing feeling so very excited. We even had a canter at the end which he took in his stride as well.

So I am very pleased with him. Plan his to take him somewhere at the weekend to have a play over some poles and then find an Intro somewhere to go and have a go at. And we have found a school to hire now so can crack on with some more work in the school :)

He looks so lovely - I love the massive smile on your face in the last one! Like this >>> :D

Thank you! Yeah I was so chuffed with his canter - I haven't cantered him apart from out hacking and was amazed with how uphill he was and balanced! I couldn't stop grinning :D

I like the first picture :)

What make are your boots? I love them!

Thanks :)

As in my boots? I can't find any long riding boots long enough so I use ariat jodphur boots and long gaiters :)

He looks like he's doing great. Love the blue matchy too.

Where are you in Scotland?? Might see you out and about with my baby ex racer as we're at exactly the same stage. :)

Thanks. It wasn't intentional - the sheet is a completely different colour blue but they look the same in the pics :P

We are near Edinburgh. Going to head to the next SDG show at Cousland and maybe try the heady heights of the clear round at SNEC :) Where are you?

We're East Lothian so will def see you around. :) I'm hoping to get to some David Gatherer lessons at SNEC before heading to the clear round. I'm not brave at jumping but my mare is! ;)

Yeah, as gaiters go I love them but would love a proper pair of long boots at some point :)

I can't remember the brand - not helpful I know but will check when I am home. ( it begins with R and is some french sounding brand I haven't heard of and can't pronounce - sorry not much use)

Ah - we are just the edge of East Lothian in Elphinstone :)

We haven't jumped properly yet, but he hunted while he was at the racing yard and apparently loved it and he has popped a few wee logs out hacking. Going to try get to a school with some jumps at the weekend and have a play - see how he takes to coloured poles  What sort of level is yours at jumping wise - I have only ever taken more established horses to DG and Andrew Hamilton lessons - was going to wait a bit to take him but I don't know what level is the minimum (if that makes sense)
