My gelding has a first of January Birthday and no breeding on his passport. Is there anyway I can find out more about his past?

Err, research his history back from where you purchased him from, post on social media groups? Not sure how anyone is meant to respond to this tbh?

I was just wondering how common it was none of his previous owners are on his passport and I know he's had multiple! It's a stupid question but I don't know if I should dig up his past or if I might find something I don't want to know

Tom didn’t even have a name in his passport. No breeding and just a generic passport. I know he had had a few owners but none in the passport. Pretty impossible to find anything.

presumably the horse is microchipped? Can you find any info from that? I appreciate data protection laws will be an issue nowadays, although it might depend on who you ask to read it if you see what I mean?

Very difficult I think. My horse has no registered breeding and actually had no birthday on his passport. He had one owner registered in the pasport, but I know he's had at least three. I think your best bet may be to go back to his last owners (assuming you're on good terms with them) and try to track him back that way. I wouldn't worry too much about digging back into his past, as you can't guarantee that previous owners were correct about veterinary issues etc. I would just get a vet to have a good look over him, then deal with any issues as they arise.

I know the dealer we got him from in England and the dealer from Ireland but the irish one sent 3 videos of the wrong horse so that was a dead end! I'm pretty sure he got sold by a private owner in Ireland for legal bills and was a friend of the dealer's wife but I also heard she found him too sharp and green so I'm not sure what to believe.

I might go down that route he got vetted just off a microchip due to something with the passport

Pretty common in animals with no valuable breeding so not necessarily sinister. Also common for those which have passed through a number of hands and the passport has been lost - deliberately or otherwise. So yes, you risk finding a history you don't want to find but if you are happy with him now then that won't change just because you find out some history. You would have considered and accepted already the risks of buying a horse without verifiable history.

Pretty common, especially for Irish horses. The only previous owner in my horse's passport is the dealer who imported her from Ireland as a 5yo with a brand new passport with no breeding info. I know she was with at least one other dealer before I bought her.

Yes, mine was an Irish import. His first registered owner was as a 2 year old (assuming he is the age I think!) and I assume she was the woman who imported him to England.

If you get her scanned you may find more chips than the one attached to your passport.
The dealer we got him from had a chip reader because she had been caught out with that before and the vet checked so I don't think he does have multiple
