just wondering when people backing young horses had them shod (how longs a piece of string i kno), am backing a horse at the moment, and to get off our yard and go hacking we have to go about 1/4mile down a very stoney ( hardcore (bricks sharp stones ect)track, just wondered what people thought?????

Mines nearly 4 and due to be backed shortly. Our yard is quite stony and have to walk over a lot of concrete to get to her field and they were wearing down too quickly just from that, so I have just had her shod in front now.

Her walk is loads more confident and forwards now and she didn't seem to notice that she had them on which is good

Just depends on how good your horses feet are, how sensitive he is and what the ground is like where you ride.

my boy is 3 and by the time hes finished being backed i feel will be in need of seeing the outside world, hes on the tall side and is tb and tb type feet, all is concreted until u try and get off the yard am concerned that he may find hacking uncomfortable??

You could always try hoof boots if you are unsure about putting shoes on a three year old pinktiger. Not sure of the best types though. I think a lot depends on the terrain you are using them on. Concrete in itself should not hurt his feet as long as you are not doing miles and miles on it stright off without a period of getting used to short distances on it. I have a 17hh warmblood that is fine on concrete, stones etc but his feet do ware down f I go on a long hack - but thats my own fault for not doing short hacks 1st to encourage his feet to grow. I do mainly dressage so its not worth buying boots for the small amount of hacking I do.

PinkTiger - see how they cope, then if it's not well, get some fronts put on.

I've just had fronts put on our loan mare. Her first ever set. Her feet were wearing down too quickly and that was on not much work at all. Minimal levelling rasp by the farrier prior to the shoes going on which says it all really. I am looking forward to the next set when he will actually have something to work with. She was fine about it all and appears to like the fact that she can now make a noise!

i think am worried as hardcore is sooo uneven and am concerned about bruising ect, i thought it would be the only way to stop that from happening....had a horse bruised sole couldnt get him right for months!!
