Hi all

I have entered myself into my 1st local show at the grand age of 28 having never shown before. I have a traditional cob and would be greatful for all the tips you can give me including, when to chip an bath, how to keep clean the night befor and what top take with me. I know nothing about showing. I have been and viewed a few local shows but that’s all the experience i have gained to date.

Thanks in advance x

You will enter the ring at walk then be asked to trot on then canter on, then they will ask you to change rein across a diagonal and do the same on that rein, then you will be lined up and pulled out to do an individual show, walk out stand square in front of judge walk away when asked then up into trot then I would do a simple figure of eight showing canter on each rein, then if required show extended canter along a long side, then stop salute and walk back in line.

If your doing it for the first time it might be an idea to do a novice ridden class, they often don't do a canter on the go round and then it's up to you if you do canter in your individual show.

Most judges stand in the middle and look one way, so you essentially have the rest of the ring to get your horse going nicely before you get to the side where the judge sees you, so I would use this space and time and make the most of it so you can look your best.

If your horse has white legs or body chalk is the best thing for keeping it white, once on use bandages and rugs to keep it all clean, you may have to touch up bits at the show.

I would do practice runs at home the same as you would at a show, just so everything is polished and you are not in a flap trying to remember things, main thing is try and relax enjoy it and smile.

What classes are you aiming to do?

Brill. I have watched a few local shows and sort of got the jist. As long as I am not 1st I can copy the others. I have 4 lessons before the show so hope in be able to get it boxed off.

I am doing 1st time classes so I am hoping they won’t be expecting it to be flawless.

I’m fighting atm with keeping white. I have used the cowboy shampoo yellow out but I still have yellow tints. My picture is to large to upload annoyingly. I was intending to bath then rug an bandage his feet. I have been told chalk an also baby powder. Have no experience of either. He is being clipped next week so will be ok cleaning body it’s just these feet! Ahh

do not use baby powder it has a tendancy to go slightly grey.

as your horse had feather I would use the loose powder chalk, add a bit of water to turn it into a pastes and then paint it on with a sponge or paintbrush the night before. Bandage overnight and then about 10 mins before your class remove the bandages, give them a flick with a brush (you will need a clean brush set aside only for chalky legs) and you should be good to go.
Cowboy magic stuff is brilliant but some stains just won't come out. best thing to do is keep the feathers clean all year round and let the yellow grow out.

Brill thanks for the advice. I have looked at gold label call. They do a loose powder or a paste. Any preference in make an poweder over paste.

I just use this stuff, its much cheaper, just add a bit of water so that it is like runny porridge consistancy

I just used to use the gold label paste after bathing, when the horse is just damp and would use a large baby sponge and just go over the whole white area then rug the body and bandage or use leg wraps for the legs and then touch up when you get to the show, I use tail bags all year round for mine keeps the tail full and clean.
