Soon to be free to good home: Beautiful 2 1/2 year old coloured gelding. Stunning boy, has brilliant manners (ocasionally! Maybe once a week!) Has splendid buck (hard to find, will be impossible to sit when backed!) He is also demonstrating a wonderful ability to rear striaght up (By no means perfected but he is practicing daily on the way back into the stable!) Can nip your finger even when you think its no where near him! Also being male he cannot stand still and will fidget continuously when tied up and groomed!! Leads out on roads but only at 100 mph, good with traffic tho and a real mummy's boy!

Anyone got any tips for a terrible 2yo? He has been a star until last week and a half! Is a horrid person atm! :( ........ Wish me luck......

I was all excited i was just getting the trailer hooked up to come and get him.

He is just testing the boundries i expect, feeling well and being a boy, has he started on any kind of food etc....:D

Good luck he sounds like a great person.
 
Great.... Debatable atm!!!

No feed is the same but has been increased due to cold weather, he is on bluechip lami lite, fastfibre and linseed. Could cut it down but he struggles with his weight sometimes and dont want him to drop condition (has taken 2 months to get him back up to weight!!!) :)
 
I'm so glad to read this though as my 2 year old is a little bar steward!
Mine likes to go for you with his shoulder then when you are off balance put his head down and go. He got me once, now he has a chain over his nose and luckily he telegraphs his intentions. He nearly got me this morning on thie ice. I got him in last night as I felt sorry for him, as of today he is back out again!

Edited to add, he also ATTACKS scary things, hes more predator than prey. He tried to eat a dutstbin bag that blew into his stable last night, after her had killed it by stomping. The other day the wheelbarrow was hiding and when he saw it he ran at it and knocked it over. Hacking will be interesting...
 
I would make sure he is entertained...I have one the same age, and although he's a darling he definitely has a 'dark side' when he's bored!
Presumably yours is turned out...is it possible to swap his companion for something a bit older that will teach him some manners?
Also he's not too young to be taught some basic groundwork, or (waits to be shot down in flames :D) taught to long rein.
We're very lucky cos our boy is in training at a small but busy yard and there's always plenty for him to look at - from a playful collie puppy to a toddler who races around the yard on a scooter!
Goes without saying that you have to keep safety as a priority - leading out in a hat and gloves, and we have found to be vitally important ....all titbits or hand feeding banned until he is at least five!
They are a bundle of energy at this age...ours blows himself up like a puffer fish in an attempt to 'scare' the trainer when he's in the round pen !
 
Must be the weather, got the wind up his bum. My 3yr old spends her whole time flat out round the field squealing.
Little scary she is fast (ex racer).
The ponies are feeling a little fresh too, i'm sure yours and mine will calm down soon enough.
 
There must be something in the air:rolleyes: Our 2yo has turned from an angel to an absolute little horror. He can buck, rear and also perfected "airs above the ground" whilst being led this last couple of weeks. He is now receiving "special education" :cool: from our wonderful YO who has had a similar youngster in the past. She assures me this is "just a phase" and "it gets worse at 4":eek::eek: Can't wait:D
 
Hopefully just the weather and a phase then!! Worse at 4 o dear.... How long will this phase last!! ? :-P Hopefully not long or i am going to run out of friends to get him in when im working late!!!
 
Hmmmm my lovely YO did not specify a time - just assured me it will get worse:D I think they just get to the age where they try their strength and then the bad weather comes and .... away they go!

He is my first baby!! :-) Have known him since he was 4 months!! :-) Have all his pics but will update!! He has grown loads was 14.2hh at 18 months and is 15.2-3hh going into winter this year (2 half yo!)

Am not sure what he will make tho?! :-)
 
they often go through the terrible 2's. as amusing as it might be, you really need to nip the bolshy behaviour in the bud. if he is being a bit of a git to lead in and out a couple of weeks of reduced bucket food, a chifney and lunge line will manner him nicely. and with this weather you really do not want something going loopy while you lead them. dangerous for them and for you. well behaved youngsters are still fun! and manners instilled at this age usually stay for life. he will be a big lad when grown, but doesnt need to be a rude one! have fun.

I dont find it funny at all he is usually very well mannered! Moves back out of space, leads calmly etc. I was amazed he had been bad! Hopefully it will just be a quick phase!!

I lead him in in his dually tonite and typically didnt need it as he was fab!!

Ofcourseyoucan you are so right. My 2yo angel has been really pushing his boundaries and at 15.3 has been starting to really overstep the mark. Because he is our first baby and he has been good since we have had him at 8 months we called in the cavalry. My YO is much more experienced with this kind of thing and has been doing some extra groundwork with him and giving us some extra help by teaching us how to deal with the naughtiness firmly but correctly. Hopefully nipping it in the bud now will pay long term dividends. You are right though - joking aside - it is definitely not funny.
