Hi everyone just looking for a bit of advice with regards to tucked up flanks.

I’ve got a cobX warmblood mare and a warmblood gelding who were both overweight coming into summer. However since we’ve had this dry spell for the past month there has been very little grass growth. Both horses dropped weight to a decent size but then both suddenly had tucked in flanks. There is two more mares in the Feild with them one has dropped weight but isn’t tucked up but the other hasn’t dropped any weight at all. Both horses are up to date with everything and have recently been wormed with Moxidectin. They have both been on a feed for 3 weeks of 1/2 Alfa A oil 1/2 fibre beet 1/4 cool mix (measured with a stubs round scoop) with some linseed oil splashed in but it doesn’t seem to have made a difference. I’m going to get a feacal and a saliva test done and if no results still I’ll get a blood test.

In every other aspect they are both fit and well, not tender round the belly at all and passing normal droppings. My mares urine can be a little dark but she’s always been a funny drinker so we have already been monitoring this for the past 3 years anyway with no recent changes.

Am I missing the point with regards to feeding? Should I cut out the hard feed and just swap to ad lib hay? Or both?

Any light on the situation would help, thank you in advance guys!

Give extra forage.

I have my mare out with my livery 24/7 and they are still getting fed hay. The grass is coming through but they are eating it as soon as it grows. My winter field is looking great though so they will be on hay until they switch over.

Agree with above just start feedi g some hay everyday, although mine are out most of the time they still get hay even more so through the really dry spell, I have cut it back a bit now as the field is looking green again.
