Any ideas? My two year old gelding has got a bony lump under his face just where the noseband of the headcollar goes. It's a bit sore but he's letting me touch it now. It's quite hard and on the bone. My guess is that his friend has perhaps kicked him...they do play rough and my boy doesn't know when to quit. What do you think? Also, any ideas on how to make it better?

Thanks

Could be a problem with a tooth. My loan horse had this problem and had to have the tooth extracted due to prolonged infection that just refused to clear up.

I'd keep an eye - but if it doesn't dissear pretty soon I'd be inclined to get the vet to have a little look.

But if the tooth is not able to errupt properly it could theoretically go anywhere.

Anyway just a thought.......

I see what you mean. It's definitley worth keeping in mind. I'll leave it for a week and see what happens by next friday. If he's got a bruised bone then it should be getting better by then. He's still eating, chewing, and drinking OK and if bright and cheery as normal

My horse has a hard lump on his lower jaw about 1 inch above where the noseband goes. When I bought him he was vetted and the vet said it was an old dental abcess which would cause him no future problems at all.

If I were you i would get the dentist to take a look as it sounds exactly like barons. Here is Barons, you cannot see it very well but it will give you an idea so you can compare it to yours (i have put a circle round it). His is litrally on the jaw bone and kind of feels like a splint but in his face.

This is exactly where loan horses lump is. Even though problem tooth was removed a large bony lump was left from he abcess.

It does seem lower than that. The vet had a good look at his teeth in April and said they they were all coming through well. Will keep any eye on it...thanks

If it gives you hope, my gelding had exactly the same kind of lump in the same place when I first got him aged around 2 and 3 quarters.

I worried that it was going to be something which would need to be removed, but luckily it disappeared all on its own a couple of months later.

That's what I'm hoping! No, seriously, if he was having trouble eating or wasn't himself then I'd have the vet out on a flash, but he's always up to something which normally resolves itself. A couple of months ago, his glands were up, I spoke to the vet, they weren't concerned, I was convinced it was something terrible...then they went down and thoughout that he was himself eating, drinking and causing general havoc. I don't know how bruised bones work but that has been suggested...

Our old pony had this...slightly lower and bigger than Baron's.
We had her at age 19 and she is still going strong at 23 complete with lump. Dentist said it was quite common and would have occured when she was a youngster.

Sounds more like that to be hionest...do you know what it is? I'm going to get him some arnica cream today so that should help if it's bruising i think

Dentist said it was due to calcification following possible infection or maybe just when they replace they're first teeth.
Bit like if we break a bone..the body works too hard to heal it and we can end up with an overgrowth of bone at the break site.

My boy got one just like that - just appeared out of no-where when he was about 4 - never caused him any probs so far (touch wood) so have never done anthing about it.

I just assumed he had had a kick in the field or something which caused the bone to calcify.

I wouldn't worry unless is is painfull for him or continues to grow.

Thanks, I think I will do that, I think it might be a kick which is calcifying, he lives with an older horse who occasionally puts him in his place although usually witout any injuries...no double my boy has pushed him too far! I bought some arnica cream at the weekend and have been putting that on...lump doesn't seem to hurt him now and seems a bit smaller. thanks for all your help...
