It is very sad but true. Sales on our native breeds are heartbreaking. Colt foals are often sold in batches and not worth the bother to enter individually.
Prehaps if more livery yards allowed colts then they would fetch a better price prehaps? I dont know any liverys around here (there are about 8 locally) who will allow colts.
While I am not surprised it does depend alot on the condition and quality of the horse or pony, really good stock still makes money at sales.
That does not mean you can not buy something cheaply and turn it around what always surprises me is that some of the sellers do not realise handling and turning out your stock makes a huge difference in price.
Some of the horses at sales I go to who have a bit of handling and are well turned out make several times more than others of similar quality it is a shame the sellers do not make more of an effort.
I agree with the turnout comment. It amazes me how they will drag them from sale to sale unsold rather than give them a good groom and oil their hooves to get a better price. I have just had a look at the results for York, there was a 5 year old stallion went for 20g too but it looks as though most entries didn't sell, those that did went for mixed amounts, some low and some really good for York. I am assuming that prices on the whole were down and most that sold were late entries so I assume people that hadn't bought earlier on in the catalogue were wanting to spend their money.
