Thought it would be a nice idea to start a H&H breeders foalie pic update thread, how are they all doing now? Are we all getting ready for weaning? Are those fuzzy coats growing in? What's everyone's plans for them?

lots of piccies please

Well ours are all weaned (January and early March foals) and looking better than we could have hoped for first foals. Being walked out daily, groomed etc, etc. as they are entered for Tatts sales this year, apart from one who will hopefully have an eventing career (like her siblings) who is up for sale privately. We're about to start getting ready for foaling again - our first one is due 6th January if she carries the same length of time as this year.

That's really interesting PL would love to hear more about the sales and further insight how the TB industry works with the selling of youngstock. What about their breeding? Are they all aimed to go to racing homes? How do you deal with early year births? Are they rugged at birth do they cope well with the temps at that time of year? TIA

Well how long have you got? Seriously, it would take hours to explain it all but you're more than welcome to pop over to us if you're nearby, meet our lot and have a chat.

As for breeding, well naturally they are all pure Thoroughbreds - stallions were chosen to complement mares in regards to bloodlines (and of course stallion stud fees being in excess of £10,000 we would definitely hope that they will be going to racing homes). We do have one pure TB though by our own stallion who we aim to sell to a private home to hopefully go eventing like her elder siblings have (although they have been in racing yards first of all).

We never have a problem with early year births - in fact I think we were lucky this year as January to March seemed better weather than spring and summer did. On top of that, we have heat lamps in all our stables if we need them. We have never in 30+ years of breeding ever put a foal in a rug, although one foal was born 5 weeks earlier than anticipated and did have to stay in her box for that amount of time so the electricity bill was rather big, but don't personally believe in rugging foals. As it is, whatever the weather (unless absolutely torrential rain) they are turned out in it. They are out in the day and all in at night time. We did have a foal born a number of years back in a middle of a snow storm and when she was 24 hours old was out playing in the snow (no rug again).

Our broodmares never see a rug either, although to get them to come into season early (if they haven't got a foal at foot), then we would put stable lights on as soon as it got dark (4ish) and they would stay on until midnight feed time.

What else can we tell you? Although the foals are entered for the sales, if we had the money we would definitely be holding on to them until the yearling sales next year (they make more money then), but finances dictate. In saying that though, if they don't make the reserve, we will be more than happy to bring them back home with us. If we win the lottery, they definitely won't go anywhere near the sales ring.

What breed have you got?

i am very pleased with this years crop of foalies, it being only my second year breeding sports horses/warmbloods. After a poor start to the year, losing a mare and foal and losing another mare leaving an orphan it seems to have picked up a bit. we did quite well at the futurity. The plans are to sell at least 2 hopefully 3 and keep 1 colt and 1 filly, my orphaned filly and an argentinus colt. All are well grown and full of character and are now gettng furry ears and coats. will be weaning the first 3 in a couple of weeks but the other two will stay with mummy until either the beginning or the end of december. I will play it by ear and see how the foals and mares are looking.
Reading Penniless post it is a shame there are not more sales for sporthorse/warmblood horses in this country like there are for racehorses.

Hi Opie

Nice to see you back again! Mine are still ages away from weaning as they were all June foals. Not too wooly yet as I have had them in rugs because of all the rain! I'll start off with a couple of pics although I'm sure you will have some fantastic ones to share with us.
Treliver Dilly the Pink a couple of weeks ago (her mother was badly kicked in the field and they were on box ret and just went in the sand school to get some exercise.

Thanks for sharing Penniless its a fascinating industry and hope you will share a lot more and hope I can take up your offer of a visit one day! Have only visited a TB stud once near Duns as a child (long time ago) they stood a stallion by the name of Newbury (I think) I painted a picture of him and it stayed on my bedroom wall for many years. Going off to read the Tattershall thread and watch some of the videos. I breed sport horses many of which have a high percentage of TB blood.

crazymare I agree I think it would be a good idea to have more sales and auctions but the ones we do have are already poorly supported. Its definitely time for someone to put together an auction that is presented in the professional manner that the EU auctions are done but that means pre selections, involving professional photographers, and videos of what's on offer and a strong online marketing and printed publication campaign in the lead up to the event. This is an opportunity for the BEF

Sorry to hear your not well Delphiepuppy, stay on top of the vitimin c intake! Cracking foalies lovely to see them growing up!
Sadly no pics from me at the moment, camara died and was sent off for repair, followed by bad weather then a run of bad health which started with the arrival of the new love of my life a standard poodle puppy! Anyway back on track so hope to get snapping next week IF the weather stays bright enough for LONG enough.

We'll try and get some as soon as we can - but there is a photo of the two entered for Tatts as new born foals on our website you can see in the meantime.

Opie: Kettle is on for whenever you want to come. From January through to July - we are busy foaling and covering so something going on 24 hours a day.

Mine is not quite 12 weeks so we've a way to go for weaning. Took him (Finn) to hs first show last weekend and seeing as he's only ever been in a quiet field with his mother and one other mare - he did really, really well. I thought it would blow his fuzzy little brain but I was amazed how well he coped!

His back end is getting darker, he's got bark roots on his mane longer than my roots that need doing... he has the fluffiest bum I've ever seen and I absolutely adore him!

My mare I bred myself 16 years ago and she's my horse of a lifetime, and I just wanted a piece of her to continue, and I admit I wanted a filly... but this little chap is a naughty little monster, totally different character to her, and I wouldn't swap him for the world.

Just have to survive moving yards now, at the weekend. It means I'll have company for when I wean him - he'll have a yearling and a couple of ponies to play with.

He's looking fabulous Gingermare! No wonder your smitten with him

Here's hoping the move goes smoothly, does this mean you will be taking up the reins again with mom? I didn't breed my old gal this year so that I can get myself back in the saddle, its been a few years now so quite anxious as have been incapacitated for nearly three years, but knees now fixed and itching to get going........

leo is 4 months and is standing at 13.3
he is slowly turn jet black
he slowly coming on hes had feet picked up and seen by farrier , grooming, leading lessons , rug lessons and slowly into to a trailer at this present moment and has taken everything in his stride
i had the idea to use him as a dressage horse later on in life which will be a test for both of us as ive only done showjumping and never dressage so me and him have so much to learn will post pics soon as i get new ones

Well I will try and get some photos of our gang today as looks like the sun is shining! They are all turning very wooly, but we wont start weaning till end of october.
Plans are to sell the two colts, Oriana is already sold and Tia I wouldnt mind hanging on to. Having said that I adore Jack and would love to run him on, and Vivaldi is looking amazing, and I wouldn't mind taking him out showing next season as I think he'd do really well. But we shall see.

bet you will be amazed at how quickly the time flies past and next thing you know you will be sharing pics with us all of him under saddle.
smile.gif

Sacha look forwards to seeing pics, send the sun up our way please, at least its been dry this week and the combine has at last managed to get going, we will have straw after all. phew.......

Well Callie is 5 months, 11h and a very bold, clever and inquisitive little creature...she went in the tack room accidentally the other day!!

Her Mummy is on strict box rest atm so she had half an hour out on her own this morning which she spent eating and playing with her 15.2h friend!!!

Just the one 08 foal for me this year - Mouse!

Couldn't get a descent picture of him in whole, but thought these were pretty nice as well. He is weaned now for a month. I brought him to another stable yesterday. He will probably stay there untill he is 3. Or he must be sold in the meantime

..... I think you are going to have to take some of Athens for me, as I just cant do him justice ...... although I did *think* about posting a photo of him <lol> but at 4 years of age - I guess it would be s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g the topic slightly

grin.gif
.... but as he/we had such a bl**dy awful start to his backing (NOT his fault) I am just so proud of him and what he has achieved in such a short time ....... he will always be a 'foal' in my eyes .....

Opie

He is by the Dutch Stallion Uphill (Oscar x Appollonios xx), a very sucesfull dressagestallion. He went to the World Championships for young dressage horses in Verden twice and was Dutch champion at ZZ-light level (advanced medium) this winter at the age of only 7. Also at ZZ-zwaar level he has been winning a lot this summer.

Here are some pics of the foal when he was about 3 months
