So I am doing a little bed time reading with my 2014 rule book.

Firstly, I think I may be allowed to be a little hopeful! They seem to have slightly reworded the rule for qualifying for the grassroots champs, in that it now says 'must not have completed an Intermediate' in the previous 10 seasons. I assume this means that the 1 intermediate that I did 8 years ago and was eliminated from now means I can try to qualify for grassroots again? Sad that I decided to move up to novice with my boy last year now, but fingers crossed other horse is sound enough to event this year :)

Something else that has confused me, annex 4 with the diagrams of refusals and run outs, i do not understand what is wrong with picture 26, can someone tell me what it is supposed to mean/ show?

Any other interesting new changes that I have missed?

I think you are right re the Grassroots qualification, as the word "completed" is in bold type, indicating a change in the rules.

Re pic 26; the problem is that you have passed behind/around an element that you subsequently jump

As someone who has only actually completed 1 Intermediate about 6 years ago, (with a 45 dr, 4 rails and 2 stops XC!); this rule is one of my biggest bugbears. About time we had a downgrade system for riders based on individual results. From speaking to other riders I think there are many amateurs in the same boat!

The rule would be fine as it is now if only they had a novice grassroots/amateur champs to run alongside the 90 and 100 but they don't- if you have a novice level horse there is nothing to aim at-the novice champs at Gatcombe are really only for the pros and are run over a top end intermediate course- I thought they were downgrading the rule more than they have-jumping round an intermediate track seven years ago and realising it is not for you or your horse (not aiming that at you DP!) hardly makes you an intermediate rider and courses have changed a huge amount in the last ten years and are a lot more challenging.

Absolutely, and now I have totally fluffed up, my super consistant horse who no doubt would have qualified for Badminton, is now in Novice, with no real aim of going Intermediate, with nothing to aim for! Doh!

Still don't get 26, not sure how it is 'supposed' to be jumped

28,29,30 show you how it should be jumped.

I suspect I would miss read that in a competition and jump it like 26. Hopefully there will not be many like that.....seems a bit strange!

OK, that's just weird, you can go right but not left?! Not a new rule this time, but I still don't get the point!

I could have put up with it for the chance to go to badminton! No doubt we'll soon be out of novice points and commit to a life of show jumping :eek3: :biggrin3:

Totally agree PJ! No offence taken, seems such a shame that because I took the plunge once and really pushed ourselves (or maybe made a poor decision?!) I'm now penalised. I don't think Grassroots even existed, so you couldn't even weigh up the risk. Now doubt when BE finally see sense I'll have served my 10 years and be too old/broke/busy raising children to event!! Something for the amateurs at N would be great but I suspect BE would just say aim for N Champs. I definitely think a downgrade system or ratio of 'Ints v years ago completed/placed' would be much better.

Are there new dressage tests for 90 or 100? Did my first BE on a ticket last year after lots of unaff so not sure what the norm is with the tests from one year to another. Thanks and sorry to crash your thread with a question.

I am in exactly the same boat. I completed 1 intermediate in 2011, then my horse broke. So now ruled out of the Grassroots Champs until 2021 which is very annoying given I am definitely no pro! Luckily I did get to go to Badminton grassroots in 2011 prior to my 1 intermediate run and it was amazing. I so wish there was something for me to aim for!
