Backing 3/4yr olds
I haven't made a post on here for a very long time but I thought I would use the time gained on lockdown to document my progress with my two 3yr olds. I'm hoping other people can join in to share their stories too as time progresses. Disclaimer: I wasn't aiming to start them until the Summer...

thought mine was a 2022 somehow but just checked, 2021, 4 next month, so, currently doing lots of groundwork, practicing lateral work, rein back, standing at block etc. Walking out in hand a lot. When the weather is a bit less terrible i'll get her wearing tack and longreining, then backed to ride by summer assuming no weird growth spurts 
light hacking in walk, very basic schooling in walk, then out to grow up over winter. Might pull her back out for the odd family hack but otherwise wait till spring!
If she was 2022, i'd do everything pretty much the same except no weight on her back past brief leaning over. MAYBE a sit on bareback (stationary) Lots of in hand walks, shows, groundwork and trec obstacles, wearing tack and longreining.
I actually entered her in an in hand trec winter series, so the groundwork has been in a slightly random order depending on that months task but it all needs doing anyway so who cares!

My 2022 isnt doing a great deal, and wont until next year. Hes a big chap at approx 17hds.
But, i have been bringing him in a bit more often, and hes now out of the field with the youngsters in ( they are yearlings, and one playful kick from him would see them off ) and in with the ridden ones/broodmares. Where he is being kept in his place nicely. Hes actually being a super lad. I just thought if i sell him this year he needs more of a routine that he/d probably have if he was on a livery yard. Have to say hes loving the extra attention.
Plan is to advertise in a few weeks, but if the right home doesnt come along hes going off to a pro to do some inhand shows.

My 2022 youngster has not done much yet. He's out 24/7 but comes in for a few hours a day for a haynet and is in overnight if weather is particularly bad. He lead, loads and is polite. I did one loose schooling session with him for a sale video and he took everything completely in his stride. He's ready to do a bit more now if he does not go as a blank canvas soon.

Mine isn't doing much yet. She can lunge, but hasn't had a bridle in yet. Walked her in hand mainly over the past years, did some umbrella proofing etc. She's moving end of March to a yard much closer (currently 50 minutes drive away), so will be able to slowly start her with some regular groundwork and easy lunging to build some muscle mass. I would have liked to have at least sat on her by September/October this year. There's no rush though, she still very much a baby horse, mentally and physically.
