2026 Foals

Thank you all, you lovely lot.

What happened ? Im not 100% sure. He was fine on friday night, all cheeky and bouncy. Saturday morning he wasnt feeding, as his mum was squirting milk everywhere. Emergency vet came and transferred us to the hospital he went to previously. Got there and although still strong was going down hill. They scanned him, no issues. Popped him on antibiotics/pain relief and monitored every 2 hours. Sunday i spent the day there. Helping with the scans / milking his mum and watching for any changes. By 4pm the vets had 'the chat ' with me. It was time to make a call as by this point he had been lying down most of the day. His mum had stopped being interested in him by the afternoon. I called another vet for a second opinion. Nothing. I asked for an extra 30mins to see if i could wake him up. They gave him morhpine. I took his mum out of the stable and he woke and followed her. So we all agreed to give him a chance. I went home about 7pm. Got a call from the vet at 10pm to say they where feeling more optimistic as he was up. Monday morning another call to say feeling more optimistic again. I went over to see him. They where really pleased as he had drunk from his mum and she was taking more of an interest in him again. Then within minutes i noticed he had started to grunt and look colicky. His mum became instantly upset. Vet checked and thought he had just over drunk and was feeling a little bloated. So administered more pain relief. I went home. Then i got the call to say he had gone down hill again. Scans revealed he had started to leak fluids into his abdomen. His organs where now compromised. So we had no choice but to let him go.

what caused this? i dont know. We should have some of the test results back this afternoon, but theres a chance we wont know. I was hoping to pick his mum up today, but the vets have just called and said shes not ready to leave him. She needs more time with him. God this is just so tragic.

So for me this is the end of our breeding journey. I will enjoy watching and following everyone elses breeding adventures and wish you all the luck in the world. I hope someone else keeps these yearly foal threads going.

So very sorry to hear this, life is shit sometimes 😞

So sorry Asha. They feel such totally inadequate words. Your tribute was beautiful. What a heartbreaking journey this can be. Sending love xxx

How gutting Asha, but you really tried your best for him and sometimes these fragile little lives just aren’t meant to be

Just thought id update you all. The tests that we did have all come back negative. We managed to find 5 different poo samples and they have ruled out Salmonella, Rotavirus and all forms of Clostridium. Ive discussed this with my vets who knew him. We can only come to one conclusion. The patent urachus he had was all very odd. The way it fell off and the way it all fell apart when trying to clamp it, then add in the inguinal hernia too. This shows an inherent weakness in that area. So perhaps he just didnt form properly, and as he grew older and bigger the weakness was just too much for his body. A friend of mine with a large stud said she had one similar, and that foal was operated on for the patent urachus, but when they went inside everything was just too weak and fell apart. This makes sense to me. So, if we had operated instead of the cryotherapy he probably wouldnt have made it off the table.
As TheMule quite rightly said some just arent meant to be.

Some dry pictures from today and a link to the birth video for anyone interested.

PH indicated it was imminent Friday morning so kept a close eye but no signs throughout the day. Left the yard around 9pm to get some food and a shower before heading back up. Was convinced it wouldn’t be until early hours of the morning.

At 22.30 I reckoned it was still a while off (hah) so made a flask of coffee to take with me, and as I did she stated pawing and getting up/down. Threw the dog in the car and had the camera feed up on my phone as I drove over - I heard her waters break and saw a foot appear 🫣 My own foot to the floor and as you can see from the video things progressed very quickly!

Raced onto the yard and got there just after he was mostly out, you can just make out my car headlights at the end of the video 😅

He’s perfect and hit all his milestones fast, and Sherbert is being a fantastic first time mum 😍

She got 2 out of three parts of my order right:

Colt ✅
Bay ✅
Tobiano ❌

Plain bay was next on the wish list so I can’t complain!
