20x20 Working Arena

Hey Guys,

Will only have access to a 20x20 arena over the winter months. I will be ordering an equiami training aid to use over this period and beyond but was wondering if there was anything else I could do other than lunge in this size arena?

Any ideas would be apprechiated.

You can ride in this size arena, I often just work down one end of the 20 x 40 arena I use with my instructor

You could also work on long-reining/ground work/suppleness exercises/teach some tricks

I've got the same problem SouthernBelle - we have got a bigger arena but it is flooded most of the time so I'm using a round pen which is more like 15x15m. Can't really canter in it because the sides lean in and it's like doing the wall of death!

You can do lots of exercises on a small circles, just remember to make lots of changes of rein and use the middle of the school. Also work from bigger to smaller circles and back again.

Try to hack or even walk round the fields once or twice a week to stop you and the horse going stir crazy!

I would think that the worse thing would be the wear and tear on the horses joints...... If merlin was worked on a 20m circle constantly he would seize up

But he has problems....... I just feel that its a small circle

Too much lunging/work on circles is hard on your horse's joints... Can you not just lunge in the 20x20 arena and school out on hacks?
