21 year old mare

I would ask your repro vet to do pre breeding checks and see what they say. We put ours in foal at 21 a few years ago and it all went fine. It did take a full summer at stud though (in the days before AI).

I was wondering about breeding cut-off ages for mares the other day.

I guess it does depend on mare health ultimately and how previous foalings went. If they went smoothly every time and she’s still very much in good physical condition, has energy and health, it’s possible..?

Is there an ‘industry standard’ average cut-off age?

I asked this question the other month, after having a vet come out for annual vaccs. He told me he'd just been to scan a mare that was 26 in foal! She'd had 4 foals beforehand and was looking incredibly well. But I can't lie my jaw nearly dropped when he mentioned the mares age. But he said its all dependent on the mare. Never say never I reckon, but definitely get all the checks done

Yeah I decided to leave my mare... She's done enough in her life. She's been used a breeding machine for years. So I just said ok its not exactly fair to you my dear. I'll leave it and not be so selfish
