Hi all,

Hoping somebody may have some advice...

My home bread, stunning colt, (who my life revolves around) appears to have a couple of vital pieces missing!

Last year (at one) we thought he had at least one, (a friend thought she felt the other as well) but when I checked a few weeks ago, I could only feel one, and a very high up one at that....

I wanted to keep him entire as I enjoy riding stallions, but considering his breeding I had also hoped to put him to stud; I've seen lots of advice as to how he should be castrated immediately as it a retained testicle could turn cancerous and he certainly couldn't be bread from, but I have also heard some people saying they could still decend and be normal.

He his a hanovarian cross, no welsh involved (I've heard they could be late developers), is there any chance he could just be a late developer? He is not dominent at all, very submissive!

:(

Hey there,

I think i replied to your other thread somewhere?

You can breed from Criptorchids, but its likely if he has little boys they will be criptorchids too.

I guess it could still drop, but if it hasn't come through the inguinal ring you have no chance of it ever dropping, I would really suggest you get a vet to come feel and give you some advice, if he has little tight high testicles the vet might be able to palpate the other one , the trouble with the testicle not dropped means its being kept at the wrong temperature, this is why they are often so tiny and not formed correctly, and in time can turn cancerous.

We are currently sending a little minature off for surgery and have been quoted £900, so it's really not funny if you discover you have been breed some colts who are also criptorchids, nobody would buy them and our vet said its usually 50/50 if ppl decide to operate or not, as so much money alot end up destroyed, very sad.

Thanks for replying (I did post it somewhere else but couldn't find it!)

I'm going to have to get the vet in this week to see him, was just hoping for a few happy ending stories! No way he'd be destroyed, luckily for him he's valuable whatever he ends up, he's going to be amazing, we'll do right by him, would just have been nice to breed from him and carry his line on.

Oh well, fingers crossed I suppose!

I bought a 2 yr old colt from the sales without looking at him. He came in the ring and I bought him, as you do when your sensible! :D I suspect hes section D x appy cob.

Anyway, he had one but the other was no where to be seen. I was lucky in that I can run him on, and lo and behold at a month short of 3yrs old, both are now there. They are going this week mind :D We went through the same thing, poor thing got used to a daily grope! :D We could usually feel one, but not always, sometimes we could feel something smaller higher up. My vet said if you've felt both earlier on they should both be there and would probably drop with sedation for gelding, not much use if you want him entire though!

Can you hang on a bit longer?

The trouble with cryptorchids re breeding is that the temperature the testicles are at will affect sperm production, they need to be slightly cooler than body temperature which why they hang below the body. Also it is an inherited condition so really should not be bred on. Monorchids ditto. Try to view it as a major conformational flaw to see it in its' true light. Great pity for you but there is an outside chance of them still dropping.

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for all your messages (restores my faith in people!)

I'm going to sound totally incompitent now but well done to those of you that told me to get the vet :D. Vet came today, both testicles are there! He must have been sucking them up slightly, and one is carried a little high and is slightly small, but they're both there! The vet advised that sometimes if one is held high for longer than normal it longer to grow but there's no reason they shouldn't end up perfectly normal! (that may not be the best explination of what she said but that was roughly it!)

Yey!!:D:D

He's such a nice boy so I'm thrilled that he may go on to breed, who knows, fingers crossed! Thanks again for all your advice.
