23% weight

Agreed jftd. At 24 although healthy, I would no longer want 13 stone even hacking my mare. But I would put myself & my daughter at that combined weight on for a minute if I had the desire to.

Well according to the 10% rule I should not be riding out 15:1 appy...at 8 stone 6 and 5'6 I am too heavy......****** that I will go with common sense!

IMO it depends on so much it's hard to judge from just the stats.
I ride mine at 23% :

But there's plenty of people around the 17% mark that are too heavy for their horses to do proper work..

Rara If you don't mind me asking, what does your horse weigh? From the photo I find it hrd to believe you at 23%

352kg on a weigh bridge later that year (or maybe earlier, I forget) :) Weighed as he went to Hungary with the British U21 driving team, then 363 last year when he got weighed for my college project :)

Pony has hollow legs ;)

Which is exactly why the press coverage is off whack - obese riders are over 10% of their mount's weight. Or indeed, perfectly healthy riders are over 10%, and the entire community is undecided as to whether this is an issue :D

Really? How much do you weigh and how much does your horse weigh? You certainly don't look almost a quarter of his weight.

It would make you around 12 stone plus tack if he is only 350 - 360 kg.

Not far off- I'm 76kg with winter riding kit on inc. boots, hat, jackets etc ;) I hate being cold :p About 71kg with just jods and a polo shirt on. with a few kg tack taking it to 82kg that makes the 23%.
Yes, I'm 5'4, size size 8/10 trousers and nearly 11 stone... Closer to 10.5 in the picture IIRC.

His front legs were xrayed earlier this month and despite being high milage and 14, in the summer doing regular 12miles fast trot roadworks preparing for driving trials he has literally no changes. Tendons all scanned fine too.

He does everything unaff and BD at elem getting around the 65% mark to date in his first few shows.

The problem with the way people respond to these posts, is that they see weight equating with fat. I do not care what people's bmi is, I do care that they do not exert undue weight onto a horse. If you are too high a percentage of your horses weight, (which seems to be a rather movable feast :p )then you should surely consider what you are going to do, for the long term health of your horse. I also get peeved at the odd comments about slim women not being real, I can promise you I am not a figment of anyones imagination and God help them if I was :D

wow rara2007 you have really cheered me up! you are most definitely SLIM and you do not weigh 8 stone. Your horse looks as if he is very fit and is not carrying any excess weight of his own.

It makes me feel better about not being able to get below 12 stone.

Not been mentioned on this thread, but one issue many of us can suffer from from time to time is crookedness - and I have had to go to the chiro recently to get this fixed. My straight 12 stone is a hell of a lot better than my wonky 12 stone!

This is interesting on that subject

My ex at 13.5 stone or so, rides a 15hh 19yo ex broodmare - last weight tape I was privvy to few months ago she was 670kg ish... In my opinion she's fat and it was painful to watch her try and turn with him uptop. She has an excellent farrier, but is fed choccie biscuits regularly etc, tons of carrots in her buckets etc........ Hey ho!

Just worked out that with all tack and hat etc i was 19% on my lady when she was ridden! Had her 10 years and never had any back problems/leg problems. She's always had yearly check ups. She isn't stocky either :O

However anyone over 10 stone wasn't able to ride her since I've always worried that she is quite fine boned, especially before she retired!

I don't think anyone should be waiting for their horse to tell them "too much".
Horses don't do that. They have generally been taught to do as they are asked.
An experienced onlooker will see that they don't move as freely as they should when they are carrying more than is comfortable, you don't see the same ping and swing..and the cumulative effects are happening invisibly.
Sadly, many people don't want to know.

Well going off the recent Daily Fail 'report' of the vet recommendation of no more than 10%, I (at 11 stone currently) am just overweight for my 16.3hh mare who is a mediumweight hunter type who I would be quite happy to let a 15 stone person on.

I think 23% is too much. But 10% is a bit ridiculous

Wagtail you reminded me of that formula, horse weight (lbs) + rider and tack (lbs) divide by bone width, divide by 2. I can't try it cos im on my phone but I think its closer to between 75 to 80 the better, up to 85 where a new mount is suggested, ill check.

I once let my other half have a little walk on my very well behaved 15.00hh.

Said well behaved horse promptly bucked him off. OH was probably about 20%of Lloyd's weight. Lloyd obviously didn't think this was acceptable. :D
